Does low SES help for residency apps?

Was wondering if it is looked at favorably. Will be applying to T20-30 IM programs. I am ORM but grew up under a really low household income (on Medicaid, SNAP, WIC and all that.) My upbringing is a central theme in my ERAS app and is related to my volunteer experiences, etc. Does this boost an app at all or is it just neutral?

From what I've been told, it's not a boost in and of itself like it can be for premed, but it is a strong part of your story of why you want to become a doc, and if you explain it well, program directors may give you a boost.

Maybe. It depends on how it is presented. Will you automatically get “bonus points” just for being low SES? Likely not. Do you have a genuine and meaningful desire and intent to bring medical care to your community, especially those of low SES, as a result of healthcare interactions or lack of access you may have experienced as a person of low SES? Could be seen positively in a residency app personal statement by some IM PDs. Some are likely not to care much. At the residency level, for top programs, there is much more focus on the strongest candidates overall and the best fit. If it’s a core part of how you see yourself as a physician that is helpful in general for your own self, so you can keep your focus in what can only be described as the drudgery of residency. But it’s not going to outweigh residency app red flags like low grades or board scores for top programs.

Most likely neutral if you take SES status in isolation. Plenty of people in medicine grew up poor. But it sounds like your upbringing has motivated many of your career decisions thus far and may play a part in your future goals and research interests. In that case, the overall story may be a compelling one as it ties everything together.

Thank you for the replies. I believe I have a strong app overall (279 Step 2 + all honors) and my upbringing does tie into my experiences, the population I want to serve, and the physician I want to become. Hopefully this is received well by PDs 😁

For the ERAS fellowship, there's a section to explain any hardships you’ve faced, with specific examples like growing up with the responsibility of caring for a relative. If your situation qualifies, it could potentially help others understand and forgive any challenges or negatives that resulted from it.

I do not think it would boost your application if it's already very strong.
