I have not seen a post on this one but the general topic is so frequently discussed searching becomes a challenge...

Are HS grades included in the GPA totals? I know they are tallied but when applying are they included in your totals? as in "my cuGPA is 3.4."

I have created a spreadsheet that includes all of my past classes and the future prereqs. It calculates my GPAs and allows me to plug in 'estimated' future grades. So I can see where my gradepoint is sitting in realtime.

Is there already some other similar tool that everyone uses and I just do not know? Anyways, I'm trying to figure out if I should include HS grades in the total-or not.

Thanks

Are you talking about AP credits? In general high school is totally irrelevant for med school admission. Your GPA just includes undergrad (and beyond).

Thanks. No not AP credits, just regular plain old HS. Just to be sure I understand this correctly, those grades are reported when applying but are not part of the total calculations?

In HS I graduated a year early (Junior turned Senior in the second semester) but IIRC satisfied two or three credits through correspondence school. That was 16 years ago and I do not remember the name of that school-therefore it may be impossible to get a transcript from there in case my regular HS did not maintain those records.

Do you know of an online database/calculator tool to use for premed planning?

I never reported any high school grades when applying to med school. Was never asked anywhere.

In general, NO HS GPA are not an issue when it comes to med school. They're even less relevant for non-trads for that matter. The interesting caveat is I was asked in one of my interviews what my standing was in HS. First, I was like your kidding, that was like 20 years ago and then after thinking about it I couldnt even remember it. I thought it was a strange question to be asking someone in their 30s after so many years and other higher educational markers available that are more pertinant to who I am today.

Go Figure

Ok thank you. With that context I reread the app instructions. Now I can read it to mean that AP or other college credit courses taken while in HS may/will count but the HS transcripts are not required.

They must use these other classes when calculating the HS GPA that I have read about... HS, FR, SO, JR, SR... but only the FR-SR grades count.

Ok, got it, I think.

Was your correspondence school a HS, or was it a college of some type? If it's the former, don't worry about it; you don't have to include HS grades. But if it was a college of any type (post-secondary), you will probably have to submit a transcript. For example, I was dual-enrolled at a community college in 1993 while I was a senior in HS. I called AMCAS to find out if I had to submit those credits, and sure enough, I did. Luckily the community college had my records after all those years!

Thank god. I skated through high school with like a 2.5  I saw the OP and it freaked me out for a minute until I read the responces.

A variation on this question. Do community college classes count in your GPA if taken during high school? I never considered it before b/c these classes didn't tranfer to my university(very strict rules). I'm applying to Master's/SMP's right now. Do they count? Count for AMCAS?

I believe all college (including CC and JC) level courses count. I defer to anyone with actual knowledge though.

I took CC courses while in HS as well and reported them to AMCAS. I didn't ask them directly because I figured the rule that all college level courses that you've taken had to be reported applied even if the person was still in HS.

Yes, ALL college-level courses have to be submitted to AMCAS. That's what I was saying earlier; I took two community college courses before I started college, they do not appear on my transcript from my major UG institution, and I even retook one of the courses b/c it was a pre-req, but I still had to submit the community college transcript anyway. If it's a post-secondary institution, and you took a class there at any time, you MUST submit the transcript. You can call AMCAS if you think you shouldn't have to submit it for some reason, but I'm telling you what they told me when I applied last year. When they say they want ALL college coursework taken, they aren't kidding.

Yeah high school is not related

I wish I could have left out my CC courses, since I just took them during the summer for fun and didn't really do stellar in them. But oh well. Wasn't really thinking about AMCAS back then.

Well, well...I never thought all those CC classes that my high school had me take would come in so useful now! It just MIGHT get me over the much desired 3.0 hump although the fact that my GPA has decreased so much since then is not the sort of positive trend that I need to show the adcoms... Is the 3.0 mark that everyone mentions TOTAL undergrad GPA or BCPM gpa?

Both.
