Im 40, had a good first career but have always wanted to purse medicine since I was a kid so went back to school at 37 for biological sciences and just finishing up , gonna take mcats.

I have done volunteering in hospitals , shadowing, etc but for clinical I have no real experience yet , except perhaps one.

I took in a homeless man when I was in my 30s and moved him into the house I have out back, we use to fish and when I found out he was living in a van I had a place for him and we became friends. He had copd and hep-c, I researched this and got him signed up with the VA for a trial drug that cured his hep-c but his copd took a toll on him. I took care of him , drove him to medical appointments and when he was in his final years I took care of him, administered his medicine, showered him, made sure he had his meals, adjusted his air, got him a hospital bed and equipment through the lions club etc..... A few times I even had to drive him to the emergency room , and in his final weeks I was at his bedside taking care of him in fact one morning I came to check on him as I usually do and he had passed and I gave him his last farewell as I waited for the EMTs. I was basically his caregiver , and instead of being a live in , he lived in my life. I took care of his funeral , got to know his family over the years and took care of everything like I said I promised him I would years ago as we had become buddies. Does any of this count as clinical experience?

What was your legal relationship?

no legal relationship just friends, on his hospice documentation he had me down as friend and caregiver and emergency contact

It is honorable what you did. But "clinical" is a stretch here.

You may have experienced the challenges of the healthcare system, but you do not hold an appropriate professional relationship with the "patient." From what I can infer, you are not in a professional observational role shadowing the clinician or assisting the healthcare provider, so it doesn't resonate as a "clinical experience."

Thank you ! I appreciate the feedback. Ill seek some clinical experience.

Remember that while you may not be able to put it down as clinical hours, your long-term care relationship would be an interesting basis for a personal statement.

Writing >> stats.

You'll need the clinical hours to understand and decide for yourself whether you would want this career as a professional, dealing with the public.
