Does iGem count as research?

The title basically explains itself. I am thinking about signing up for a theme based research course that is offered at my university and one of the choices is participating in an iGEM competition. I am confused if iGEM really is a research experience or more like a collaborative project. What do you all think?

ummm do you know what iGEM is? It is a research project in genetic engineering/synthetic biology.....
