I did a graded independent study assignment in the Evoluntiony and Ecology Biology department of my university this past semester. The grade I received was of course listed under Evoluntiony and Ecology Biology. I assume that this grade will be included in my science gpa. Is this true? any input will be appreciated. Thank you.

No it does not count. Yes it is in a science department, yes you probably worked hard, but no does not count.

That being said, AMCAS makes mistakes and there are some who have had it count.

Why not? It's ecology and biology, which is BCPM, and I didn't find anything on the AMCAS instructions that said that independent studies (IS) don't count towards BCPM. Only thing I found on the directions was that you shouldn't mark IS as a repeat because it's designed to be repeated. I have a similar problem, but it's with an directed study microbiology class I'm taking this spring.

So is it because the class is independent study, or is it because of the department?

Yes, it does count. It's not a "mistake", as the poster above claims, that it was counted. Everyone I know who did an independant study for a semester or two had it included in their BCPM. Counted in mine, too.

I imagine it is because it is independent study, not a class. Simply because it is in a science department does not ensure it is a class that satisfies the requirements. Many classes, e.g. history of science, are cross-referenced within a science department and don't count.

As some have said, it was counted towards their math/science GPA. This is the exception, not the rule.

my DIS's are P F... how could it count??? duh...

Mine are an actual grade (A-F)...I'll just list it as biology, submit super early, and see what happens. My BCPM could use the boost!

So research isnt supposed to count towards one's BCMP grade? that is so uncool

Do you know if they count grades in independent study/capstone for non-science classes?

I swear to god, it's like the AAMC scheme was made specifically to pluck all grades above B+ from my GPA.🙄
