I mean does it make a difference if ure uncle is one the faculty (associate prof) of the medical school u apply to? Assuming above average stats

I guess it depends on whether all his colleagues hate him.... 😉

sorry to be facetious - probably it will get you a bit of attention, but you still have to do 99% of the work of getting in yourself. In medicine, as in all things, politics works..

hmmm, actually i think it could really hurt you:

if an adcomm finds out that your uncle had the social and economic resources available to enable him to become a physician and academic, that may lead them to believe that your uncle's sibling, ie your parent, failed to thrive and also become a physician, even though he/she came from a similar background, which may then lead them to conclude that you are from the "slacker" or worse, "stupid" side of the family and won't make a good physician.

if i were you, i wouldn't mention it. i hope your uncle doesn't have the same last name as you!!!

Are you being serious?!? Not everyone wants to be a doctor, I dont see how an adcom can draw that conclusion you just made up. Suppose his "stupid/slacker" side couldnt go to med school but went to law school instead? Just doesnt make any sense. Anyway

I'd mention it. In this game we need all the help we can get, and the fact is, nepotism exists and if you can, you should use it to your advantage.

ummm, exmike, you only have, like, 38 posts. who are you to dispute me? anyway, i have like 271 so i think i know a little more about this process than you do . . . .

god 🙄

I see, so number of posts is correllated with admissions process know how. Thus your 200 some odd posts makes you an indisputable expert on admissions.

Anyhow, the point of forums is dialogue. I wouldn't want anyone to be misinformed, so I put in my 2 cents.

I have 2 posts, does that mean I don't know $hit

This is a funny statement...anyway I think I have 264 posts, so I feel comfortable in disputing you banannie 😉

Seriously though, I dont think it will hurt you in the way that banannie described. But how do you work it into your app?? I really am curious...some schools do ask in the secondary if you have any relatives who are alum or work for the university. but if this university isnt one of those I am wondering how to work it in there without sound like you are name dropping...

Spin😀

My father teaches at a school, it didn't help me jack. I didn't even get an interview at that school, maybe because he is just a guest lecturer. I thought he would have some juice, he had as much juice as kool aid, 0% juice.

no, exmike, number of posts is correlated with your worth as a HUMAN BEING!!!

of course i'm joking!!!! (thank you, tBw) i admit it was pretty lame, but it's 1 hour till holiday weekend and i'm a little silly (and i got the shakes, you see)

anyway, to the OP yes of course tell the adcomm that you're related to one of the profs. in fact, some schools will ask you that on your secondary apps. what would be even more helpful is if your uncle knows someone on the adcomm and can tell that person to keep an eye out for your app.

ok, maybe its my mood today, but this made me laugh 😉

Just don't mention it to the other applicants interviewing the day that you are. While waiting with the other applicants for our individual interviewers to arrive, an applicant introduced herself and announced that her father was a faculty member at the school - not the best way to break the ice to a bunch of nervous premeds. She did not seem to be mean-spirited in any way and I don't think she realized how it sounded.

An appropriate way to mention your uncle might be to work it into the conversation if your interviewer asks the "Why this med school?" question. Relate how you gained your familiarity with the curriculum, teaching methods and environment at the school through conversations and feedback from your uncle.

Best of luck with the whole process!!

i have a miniscule number of posts, but i think banannies first post was hilarious. thats quite an active mind you have. 🙂

when you go to your interview, answer EVERY question with:
"Ask my Uncle. He teaches here you know."
