Does it make sense to apply to away rotations which have been open for a while?

I kind of missed the boat on the whole month of March as far as applying for away rotations goes. Would I be throwing money away by applying to popular programs which have been open for nearly a month now?

You can try calling and finding out if they still have spots.

I think if it's a program you would LOVE to end up at then apply and follow up with a phone call or email to let them know you're interested. Some programs don't open till May so it really just depends on which one but if you know it's been open for a month I'd say email first to ask before wasting money or just apply and cross fingers that you'll get in off of a wait list or if someone cancels.

I would definitely email/call the medical student program coordinator and see what spots are potentially available. Saves you the hassle of submitting all the program-specific requirements for an application only to be told the rotation is completely full.

Also remember, just like interviews, people cancel rotations once they get rotations at somewhere else they think is a better fit for what they want. That means spaces can open up in the next few months at places that otherwise might be closed in a given month. So it never hurts inquiring about availability later if needed.
