About to complete my first gap year where I just took a ****load of courses. Next academic year I plan on working and then applying in June.

I am also in new LDR and although it's going pretty well for us (we're both super busy), I don't see why I couldn't move closer (2-3 hours away, he lives in a rural area).

Being from Chicago, I obviously have a good reason to remain a resident here, would moving somewhere for ~9-12 months change that? I also just want to get out of my comfort zone. I wouldn't change my address/ID/etc.

To my knowledge, you remain a resident of whatever state is used for your permanent residence/government ID/jury duty/etc. unless you apply for state residency elsewhere.

Legally, it gets murky because most, if not all, states have some laws that require you to change driver's licences if you're moving there for more than x number of weeks/months. It's not rigorously enforced though unless you get pulled over for something - then the officer can ticket you for failure to notify DMV of address change or something like that. But if you want to remain an Illinois resident, you can and nobody will ever be the wiser.
