I know that grades recieved during 3rd and 4th years are important to residency directors, but...does it also matter WHERE you did your clincal years? I really love the school I am at, but unfortunately some of the core 3rd year rotation spots are less than par. Anyone have any thoughts??

From my limited experience(just from having finished interviews) it seemed like PDs were most concerned about where you did your rotation in EM. So if the core rotations at your school are "sub par" just do the best you can in them(meaning Honors as much as possible) but don't stress. If you do an away rotation in EM at a well know EM place and get a good grade and good recs that should put you on a pretty even playing field as students from other med schools.
Good luck,
limabean

agree with limabean. the most important is where you did your em residency -- it helps to do it at a place with an em residency. however, if you have real cruddy 3rd year rotations, you may be behind clinically and thus not excel at your 4th year em rotation. but there are so many hospitals and rotations that no one is really going to care where the hell you did psych, peds, ob, etc...

When it comes to thinking about what is important to a PD, try to think about the things they actually have time to consider. After your grades, board scores, ED evaluations, LOR's, etc. Do they really have the time to think about where you did your outpatient peds rotation?

Probably not.

I still have a lingering feeling that it matters where you went to medical school.

All things being equal, the guy who went to Harvard is always going to get ranked more highly than the guy who went to State School X, I believe.

Moral of the story: Don't let things be equal.

medical school does matter. but where you did your clinical rotations doesn't as much -- the grade matters more. do program directors across the country really have any idea whether affiliate A of X medical school have a good or bad family med rotation???? no of course not. to reiterate (and to clarify since i just noticed a typo in my last post).... for em, do a em rotation at your school and an away one .... if your own school does not have an em residency, your away one should definitely be at a place with a residency. and do well in your em rotations... and get a good letter.
