Does it really matter from which school you graduate ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would say the following:

If you want to specialize ...be in the top 10-20 % of your class-no matter where you attend.

If you want to go GPR ...top half of your class-no matter where you attend.

If you want private practice right away....does not matter where]you attend (in terms of long term success)

That being said...it is different for each individual..and some schools prepare you better than others. In the long run, it does not matter where..but how well you do while in school and how much you put into it throughout your career.

No it does not matter. My 4 diplomas are all hanging in my waiting room, framed with the school's name in the matte and 3 of the diplomas have next to it a drawing of the school with the name of the school again in big letters. Undergrad, dental, GPR, ortho. I don't think anyone looks at them and hardly anyone ever asks where I went to school or residency. If they do ask, they certainly don't care.

Oh they care, just not about your education in particular. They're probably just asking to be friendly/talk about college sports.

Ha, I went to 3 schools with either no sports team or terrible ones, and the 4th school is the nerd school of the SEC. No one wants to talk to me about college sports. Though around here, people just don't care that much about college sports like they do in other parts of the country. Maybe now that Rutgers is joining the Big 10, college sports will become a slightly bigger deal. Hmmm, maybe that's why they brought Rutgers into the Big 10.

I always tell patients that since I went to Pitt, I have to be a Steeler fan.

Most are more concerned that I'm a Steeler fan than that I went to Pitt.
