If I had the option to specialize in Oral Surgery, should I take that opportunity instead of doing general dentistry?

Should I just become a GP who takes lots of CE and opens practices to run business or would it be worth it to go into OMFS?

Yes, the field interests me and I already know enough about that. I’m asking about financials and lifestyle because I want to know what I’m getting into, if I’m going to be in school for that long.

I care about my passion (in work), but I also care about my mental health / physical health LONG TERM. so I want to make sure it’s worth it.

Does anyone know the lifestyle of an OMFS?

How often do they work a week and are they burnt out or do they have good time for family and vacations?

Whatabout the income? And of an owner?

Can OMFS do business and eventually scale out of the chair for passive income? I know that’s easier for ortho or GP, bc as a surgeon you’re needed at your clinic.

But what would stop an OMFS from running a separate general dentistry clinic? Or is that completely unideal and not realistic.

Long answers appreciated, I know alot of this depends on the person and preference but I want to see what others think and have to say about this.

Someone drop wisdom on a youngin trying to think ahead for himself.

I am not omfs but I think on average specialization pays off. Just look at the median incomes and calculate your break even point to see if it’s worth it to you or not.
However, I think your interest and passion for the specialty or general dentistry should guide you. Especially in a business landscape where we’re increasingly becoming individual contributors rather than owners. Institutional investors are becoming the big movers in the consolidation of our industry, not dentists. To be blunt, I think you should assume in either case, gp or omfs, you’re at the chairside and not a multi practice owner. If that were the case which would you rather do?

No matter what direction, you have to generate income other than what comes from your two hands. The dental profession will provide a good launch point to build wealth.
