I got a letter from Northwestern to apply there but my stats are way below their average.

Just advertising or legit chance?

I depends on your race. If you are URM or come from a low SES family, it could be a recruitment thing (that stills doesn't mean you'll get interviewed- they just want a larger pool of URM applicants to choose from). Otherwise, it might be advertising that you shouldn't read much into (but still apply if you have the stats because Chicago is a fantastic city and Northwestern is cool)

I also got a letter from Northwestern and Harvard about my MCAT. I know a lot of other people who did as well. I think if you're black and do well on your MCAT they automatically send them out (assuming you consented to the Recruiting Service). I didn't take them seriously and don't plan to apply to either. My app is already muy expensivo without being manipulated into paying more secondary fees.

That decision is valid. I don't think they actually mean much, just letting people know that they're within range and shouldn't be discouraged from applying.

Hard to say what this stuff actually means.

I was shocked to get emails from Case Western and Harvard based on my mcat score (31), which was way below the medians at both schools. I got an interview at Harvard but was rejected post interview. Accepted at Case.

I got a similar letter from wash u inviting me to apply, but then a week later got another letter that said we made a mistake...your mcat score was erroneously recorded in our system as being higher than it actually was. This was followed by an email a few months later encouraging me to apply again. I didn't bother.

I hate those letters so much. It's ridiculously slimy. When I was in high school I was a terrible student and still got emails and letters from prestigious schools encouraging me to apply. Do you not make enough money as is from the application fees?

I received 2…1 from the Caribbean and another from Case Western Podiatry School 😛

That being said, if you got a mail, I think it's safe to say that you don't have a ZERO chance…otherwise, they probably wouldn't send you the mail. Your chances may be very small; the purpose of the ads is probably to get that 1 or 2 hidden gems who have awesome ECs, story, etc but low stats.

Chicago is a terrible city to be in. Unless you want to be murdered, of course. I guess if you made an effort to stay out of the South Side, it'd be safer but it's still not a great city to be in. Business is leaving the city and a lot of it has become run down. Northwestern is very cool though.

OP, it means they want your money.

The real fun for me was getting emails from caribbean and podiatry schools lol.
More will be coming. Now that the application season is over, I'm getting a ton of emails to apply to masters program. I got an "invite-only" email to apply to Jeff's MPH program.

Nah man, I'm gonna take my med school acceptance instead

I got invited to apply to a SMP at a med school that I declined an acceptance to lol

I still get emails from Caribbean schools occasionally haha. It got so bad with SGU that I forwarded one of my MD acceptance emails to them and said I will send a different one next time if you keep loading up my inbox with your spam. While a tad bit on the arrogant side, this worked quite well.

Got an info packet in the mail from WUSTL. I had a 3.5x gpa. Did not waste my money applying.
