Hey guys,

I know for many (if not all) schools, you need to have a year of bio with lab. This year, I took a biology course that said it had a lab on the university website. However, last week in class, the professor told us that there were actually no labs in the course but they were just tutorials and they called them labs so that they could get a longer time slot.

I was just wondering, would this course still fulfill the lab requirements for med school pre reqs because it says online that there is a lab in the course?

Thanks! 😀

I don't understand. To me, a tutorial is a youtube video. Please explain.

So wait, is this your general biology course?

Tutorials are like classroom-size groups (usually 15-20 students) where we expand on the course content and do quizzes, lessons, presentations etc.

Yeah, it's one of them 😀
Do you ever put gloves on? or, touch/see glassware? Are there lab benches? What biology is this?

My university does something similar to this for upperclassmen taking the intro to bio course every spring. The fall version has the physical lab and the spring has online labs. Both are worth 4 credits

Is it worth more credits than a typical lecture only class?

It's worth the same amount of credits as my other lab classes 😛

I don't think we will be using gloves or glassware. Mainly, we will be doing research on topics and then debating/presenting them. Also, it is an Ecology course.

No. That's known as section or recitation at most other colleges. It is not a lab.

Yeah, it's one of them 😀

For actual Bio majors?

OP, i'm confused here... Is this the class that all premeds at your university take?

How many credits is it worth? How many credits is a typical lecture with the same number of periods in your schedule (minus the "tutorials, if they have their own period) worth? Is there a letter attached to the end of the course like a C or L that would indicate a "lecture with lab component" course?

Depending on these and whether med schools are familiar at all with your school, you might be able to get away with it, but I'd recommend taking some other, possibly advanced bio lab course anyway just to be safe, and maybe look like you're going above and beyond in advanced coursework.

Would you be willing to tell us the course and what school you go to so we could look it up? It not that's perfectly understandable. Could you copy/paste the course description on here?

Yeah...why is separate course credit offered for a section/recitation? It should be part of the lecture course credit to attend..

My competitive vertebrate anatomy lab was offered separately from my comp vertebrate lecture class, but we were required to take both for graduation.

Btw OP, the answer is no. Lab = handling glassware and stuff.

That's common practice. At my school, all science labs are offered and schedule separately from the lecture courses. To my knowledge, the other Ivies also do the same. You don't have to take the lab if you don't want/need to.
