I really want to be a pharmacist....I even got accepted into UF....I have never done retail pharmacy before...so I dont know what it involves....friends of mine tell me that it gets really boring and monotonous after a while and they also told me that once we start working in retail, we dont really use alot of the knowledge we obtained in pharmacy school.....I mean if a pharmacists job involves verifying and consulting then to me it doesnt seem like a pharmacy education is put to use....

Thanks.

Yes, it does. But then again, what doesn't after a while?

I'd agree....yes...it does have its boring & repetitive moments. My husband complains about the same thing when he does routine dental fillings all day.

But....when it is intense - its very intense and the adrenaline & mental stimulation is well worth it. I couldn't maintain that intensity all the time, but its great when it happens.

I'd agree w/ everyone else in that everything gets boring if you do it long enough. Retail in particular is quite repetitive, but if you work a busy store those slow days are few and far between so they are really appreciated when they occur.

Perhaps, it may be better to continue to expose yourself to other options in pharmacy. Long term care/home infusion is another setting that gets dry quickly; however, hospital pharmacy can vary a lot w/ the hospital and even within the same hospital from day to day. Example, try to shadow someone working in a major trauma care center or critical care pharmacist and see how many codes they go on in a daily basis. That kind of setting isn't for everybody, but it is fair to say that everyday brings a different challenge. Other perspective would be to shadow someone in an ambulatory clinic and deal w/ the variety of different pts each day.

never a dull moment in my pharmacy..and my life.

Yes - I have to agree that there are parts of it that tend to be repetitious. On the other hand, so much of it has to do with the individual pharmacist and how they approach their job. I have worked for many years with one pharmacist who is content to simply fill and verify, period. She has absolutely no interest in anything beyond that, and will only counsel if she has to. So, yes - from my point of view her job is boring and repetitive. However, I have also worked with pharmacists who seemed to have much more interesting jobs simply because they sought out opportunities to interact with customers and provide extra service. It's not a coincidence, in my opinion, that those types of encounters lend themselves to better use of the clinical information that we will learn in pharmacy school. One of the pluses of retail is that mostly you are the only pharmacist on duty, and you have a lot of leeway in terms of running the pharmacy how you want to do it - I think the choices you make there can make a big difference in how interesting or boring your job is.

What job doesn't get boring and monotonous after a while? Try filing papers for a living. At least the pay is high in pharmacy, and you don't have to work in retail if it is not stimulating enough for your taste. There are lots of other pharmacy jobs out there, like trauma care the other person mentioned. And you can make retail stimulating if you are willing to put forth the effort, like the above person stated.

lol, my pharmacist today was bitching about how 14 hour shifts in retail pharmacy do get monotonous.

The compensation for that boredom provides plenty of excitement.

Pharmacy isn't just retail, you should research your options. As someone had previously mentioned, if you're looking for a varying pace each day you should look into working in the ICU or ER in a hospital. I've worked both as an intern and they were never routine (been to a few codes and it was definitely an adrenaline rush). Plus you get to use the knowledge you learned in school in addition to learning a lot that you didn't get exposed to in your education.
If you are completely dead set on just working retail, then you may have to fight the monotony. You could always work prn retail if you decide to work on the floors in the hospital and you need a change of pace.

Well Said. 👍

No, pharmacy gets boring and monotonous before a while. Not after a while. Seriously.

Verifying and Consulting while getting paid 100k could be the easiest job in the world. lol I would do that all day for the money.
