If you are in that "vicinity", the pulp may already be dead and not just playing possum.
To answer your question. Maybe. In my 30+ years of practice I have seen it go both ways. Assuming you have presented the possibility of pupal exposure,the patient will generally appreciate your attempt to avoid endodontic therapy irregardless of the final outcome.
