I searched but couldn't find anything regarding whether or not shadowing a resident is fair game to consider as shadowing on AMCAS. I feel like since they're MDs it should count, especially because they're still at the hospital, but I'd like other opinions.

To piggyback, how about shadowing a fellow?

When I shadowed a resident they made sure I worked with their attending also. They told me to make sure I put the attending name on everything for med school because some schools frown on resident shadowing.

I did check the LOR section of all the schools I applied to and they used terms like "observed you clinically" - I never saw anything about shadowing.

A lot of times when I shadowed a surgeon, when he wasn't doing anything he'd send me off with his residents. List it as shadowing for sure.

It counts in terms of experience, but to the extent you are hoping to get a LOR it won't be as useful.

I have shadowed attendings, fellows, and residents and I personally found fellows the best. They explained so much more to me than any other group I thought and were always getting me involved with things (not over the top though), just making sure I observed things that I probably would have over looked otherwise or giving me their stethoscope to listen to lungs and stuff. I thought I was the best. But maybe it was jus that those couple of fellows were so great. I mean the attendings were great too, just I thought the fellows got me more involved.

i shadowed a resident and listed it
he taught me a lot of interesting things, let me help a little and showed me so much. it seems that it's more the person rather than the title that can make an experience valuable.

I shadowed some residents and I liked it a lot. They took more time to explain things to me and were more interested in my plans.

I asked Catalystik how to list resident shadowing in the Work/Activities thread and she told me to put it down with my other shadowing and to mention that it was with residents

It's a good experience and should count. If anything it should give you a better experience of what medschool will be like as the majority of your time will be spent with residents on a lot of your rotations in 3rd and 4th year. As others have mentioned not as good for letters. Situations in med school where med students have worked with upper levels or chiefs who are going on to faculty the following year may could apply here too. So if you work with them in their last year of training and the application cycle matches up they could theoretically get you a letter the following year when they are out of training.

Thanks for the input, guys! I'm definitely not trying to get a letter, just want to get some shadowing hours in over break. Looks like I'm good to go.
