I'm in Canada (and an American citizen) and there are several legal boundaries around shadowing a doctor, however, I have an interview this week to scribe an ER doc part-time. Would that be enough to transcend the need for 'shadowing' on an app?

This maybe a silly question and I'm pretty sure that scribe > shadowing.

Did you mean to say you would interview this week to scribe for an ER doc part-time?

I think that the vast majority would consider that scribing for an ER doc would include both clinical experience as well as physician shadowing. I've run across one instance where this was not so and an applicant was dinged for having no listed shadowing, hopefully based on ignorance, and possibly an incomplete description of what the scribing entailed. To be on the safe side, you might work the word "shadowing" into the title of the activity and into the description as well.

Haha, yes. I meant I have an interview to 'scribe' for an ER doc part time (fixed). The fact that you ran across one person whose experience didn't qualify for shadowing is exactly why I asked... the fact s/he got 'dinged' for not having any shadowing experience makes no sense to me.

Thanks Catalystik. 👍

I agree that it makes no sense to ding someone for lacking shadowing when they list employment as an ED scribe but that's why we say that you should apply broadly -- you never know when you are going to come up against someone who makes a boneheaded decision that kills your application at one school.
