Hey everyone,

It's been a while since I've started a post so I figured I might as well throw one out that I've been thinking about more and more when I'm on SDN:

Does *everyone* know that a good percentage of the stuff in this forum is just plain nuts? Crazy, like? I know that we all have minor concerns and this is the best place to air them. I also know that admission to medical school is just about as big as they come for most people here (myself included.)

Still... I need to be reassured that most people around here don't think that this is normal. I'm not terrified of the work in medical school, but I am a little bit worried that there will be a number of people who don't have a good balance in their life, who don't have as much fun as they should.

I worry about myself a bit: maybe that's why I'm posting this. It's like self-therapy: if I can identify the problem, saying "when I'm all about medical school I become somewhat of an overfocused nutter" then maybe I will be less so.

I just hope that some of the people who are so damn crazy on these boards are more normal in real life. I know I hope I am.

I think med school and medicine is full of nutcakes and unbalanced people. It will be a struggle to maintain our sanity and some balance in our lives. Any profession where people are complaining when the work week is "reduced" to 80 hours a week has to have at least a few nutcakes in it.

Hehe, that's a touch. To think I was excited when I read an op-ed in the NYT saying that raising hours back to 120 for surgical subspecialties, while reducing the number of years of residency, and got excited. Anways, I just hope it's all figured out by the time we have to match.

Currently 12:3 (with 5 at least hoping for change). I'm disturbed. Anyone else care to comment?

hmm. my sequence of thoughts:
first I thought you were talking about SDN threads getting out of hand (which they do with increasing frequency) or SDNers being increasingly mean.

Then I read the poll question and thought, yeah I'm nuts about SDN! serious habit to kick.

But to answer your concern, I think ppl in medicine are often intense in general. And I think looking at SDN is like oversampling the nuts in the pre-med population (wishful thinking?) though I have met few pre-meds in person who are laidback and in perspective about the application process. 🙄 I think the process inherently weeds those ppl out, unfortunately. Actually, while I was applying I actively avoided SDN because the intensity was frightening!

my $.02 🙂

as long at there is Y!IFMBA
I won't be disturbed

When reading some of the posts and talking with some fellow pre-meds you may find the following mantra useful:

"This is all good preparation for my psych rotation, this is all good preparation for my psych rotation, this is all good preparation for my psych rotation,..."

😉 don't let them get you down. There will be good and 'bad' people everywhere....

😀 hey, just remember we need to treat the patient not just the disease

personally i love being a little nutty....it's those intensely competetive pre-meds that i don't like!

I hear ya, Irish. Sometimes I worry that I've become a little too obsessed about this whole process via SDN. I mean, there is absolutely no reason why I have to or even should want to read about Columbia's waitlist movement as an applicant this year; yet something inexorably draws me to those threads completely irrelevant to me. Maybe this isn't what you're trying to get at, but SDN seems sort of like an emotional crutch in this hectic and uncertain process. Odd thing is, I sometimes feel it only makes it worse . . .

The Everyone Forum disturbs me. 😱

But I didn't vote in the poll. "Does SDN sometimes disturb you?" "I am."

hey Irish what's up?

Anyway guys, going through the process last year a bunch of us SDNers had gotten fed up with the nonsense and obsessive/compulsive behavior going on in here that we basically started a thread mocking the pre-med application process. Fittingly it was entiled "affirmative action thread" and credit to DW (cool guy btw) for starting it. I think we mocked every single pre-med insecurity and then some. The great thing was that it really released a lot of the tension in here for awhile at least.

Here's a link and I warn you, don't eat while reading it b/c you may end up spitting out your food at your computer screens from laughing so hard.

affirmative action thread

Since all of us are now hanging out in the lounge screwing around until classes start, you 2003 applicants may want to, um, continue the tradition. 😀

I love SDN!

I love the different characters on SDN and the arguments from the level headed nice Y!IFMBA ppl to the smart aleck 'trolls.' It's been such a good insight into other people's thinking procedures and learning what upsets people and what doesn't.

Is it disturbing? Well, lets just say.......to be on the safe side I'll make sure a non-sdner operates on me if needed.

There are some nuts people on SDN though check on the AA threads and you will see some of the astrocities.
