I just had a interview at NYUCD. I would like to send an email to say thank you to my interview. Does sending thank you letter to your interview help getting in? Anyone have done it?

Yep I did it. I'm not sure it made any difference in me getting in but it shows class. I think is wise to write a very short, personalized thank you card.

i sent short thank you emails to my interviewers. i think sending a card or a letter is a little overboard... plus it might not even get to them.

Yea, I did mostly just emails too.

The thing is, some schools adcomms will decide whether you are in or not right after the interview panels. In that case, sending emails or thank you cards probably wouldnt have changed anything.

The admissions committee automatically gives precedence to people who send thank you notes, despite their qualifications... I actually received a rejection and then sent back a note saying "Thank you for your rejection." One week later, I received a letter of acceptance.

true story.

Absolutely DO spend the 5 minutes and the 41 cents to send a Thank You letter after each and every interview- well only if you are serious about that school. It will go into your file at the school. Don't believe me- call and ask. An email Thank You is showing that you aren't as interested in the school as you were when you came dressed up in a suit. They will most likely NOT print out the email and 2 days later will not be able to connect your email with the applicant that they interviewed that day.

Wow, you are so going to dental school! 👍

actually, i've sent all mine by email and i've gotten all but positive responses from the interviewers. one school even told me that they would include my thank you email in my file....so i don't see how sending a thank you card via email hurts especially when some of these adcom members say "email me" when giving me their business card

but to answer the orginal question, no- sending a thank you card doesn't increase your chances any more than not sending one; its just common courtesy

I agree. Both old-fashioned cards and emails are acceptable in this day and age. Certainly it wouldn't hurt if you wish to buy a card from Hallmark and send it via snail mail, but from my experience an email message, properly crafted and formatted, will do just as well. I personally don't think that these kinds of things will have a sway over acceptance/rejections, if any, but I do think that they show class.

i can't imagine it would make a difference really. at most it would remind them who you are. it's definitely the polite thing to do.

also, how long has NYUCD had your app? i haven't heard from them yet, so obv getting antsy.

its been a few weeks since my interviews already (almost a month for one school), but do you think its too late to send a thank you email/card to the admissions people? or would it be kinda weird sending it so long after the interview?

i know that some schools decide your fate relatively soon after you interview. at columbia for example, they told us that they would make their decision the following week (right before they interview the next week's bunch) so sending a card a month later might make no difference at all. on the other hand, if they have decided to reject you, it may make them want to take a second look? i think that's grasping for straws but you never know.

A nice gesture is a nice gesture. I don't think the Thank You Letter helps because everyone seems to decide fairly quickly if they like the applicant or not. So just send it to be nice. 🙂 Nice people are great.

I don't know whether or not it directly affects your admissions decision, but I think it definitely has an effect on how the interviewer sees you. Why would you ever leave that to chance and risk offending someone who does think it's socially required?

It's probably not required, but it certainly can't hurt to send a nice personal note. I know email is more and more acceptible these days, but you never know if the people you speak with are more traditional or not.

Like some others have said above, it shows extra interest in the school, attention to detail, and common courtesy to at least say thank you. And it makes much more sense to send them within a couple days of your interview, not a month later (although better late than never IMO).

EDIT: The effect of my post was ruined by the word filter. Shame.
