Does shadowing D.O. hurt your chances at M.D. school?

I've been shadowing D.O. and I have the stats to get into M.D. school. is this a disadvantage to M.D. schools?

Shouldn't be. As long as he trained at an ACGME residency and isn't performing OMM you should be fine.

You should shadow an MD as well. Everyone should try and shadow multiple docs anyway.

mclinkin94: Please disregard drama's highly inflammatory post.

The fact of the matter is, M.D. or D.O., you're shadowing a physician and those shadowing hours will count. It would also be wise to shadow different specialties.

Um. It's true that both are physicians, and MDs and DOs are pretty much indistinguishable in practice in most cases. Still, there are differences in philosophy that can show up, and there are DOs who use OMM. It's kinda like you need a DO letter for many DO schools. An MD school may question shadowing only a DO. Not because they think DOs are inferior. It's because they may question how well you understand what an MD might do compared to a DO.

Calm down buddy.

OP, I reiterate my previous post: shadow an MD too. Shadowing multiple docs is good whether they are MD or DO (and you also wouldn't have to worry about this issue either).

I never said the OP should only shadow a D.O. 😴

I'd also appreciate it if you refrained from the condescending "calm down" statements when I myself never indicated I was "raging" or "angry." 😴

No it's not a disadvantage. Focus on shadowing in several specialties rather than worrying about if they are an MD or DO (the stuff about an ACGME residency is pretty ridiculous. No one is going to know or care)

No, I don't think it would either. However, when I listed my shadowing experiences on AMCAS, I didn't distinguish them and just said "Dr. X, Neonatology." On AACOMAS, I made a point to put their "degree."

Fair. But you did call it a "highly inflammatory" post, which seemed like an overreaction to me. His post was not meant to disparage DOs.

And I know you did not say that only shadowing a DO will suffice. Still you emphasized that both are physicians so it is fine to shadow a DO. That is true, but I wanted to clarify that while the degree may be equivalent, there is a difference between shadowing an MD and DO in regards to application purposes (for both MD and DO apps).

So sorry for being "condescending." The internet medium isn't great for subtle aspects of communication. I was just trying to be clear for the OP.

Thank you everyone so much! I will try to get in some M.D. Shadow hours.

I did a bunch of shadowing in a rural, underserved area of my state. Guess what most of the docs there were. *Gasp* D.O.s! The schools cared more that I worked somewhere rural rather than the specific type of doc it was.

P.S. I also did some shadowing of NPs in the clinic too. 😱

Dude nobody cares who you shadow as long as you do it. No adcom is going to sit there and say "well your application is otherwise flawless but you shadowed a DO who does OMT, you are therefore blackballed from acceptance to our school."

This was a long time ago but I remember MD interviewers being interested in my DO shadowing than at my DO interviews.
