While searching for emergency physician job postings, I noticed that Texas, and in particular central Texas (Austin area), seems to be paying a very high amount compared with the rest of the country. I've seen dozens of ads advertising $400-450,000 jobs for board certified EM physicians (with experience?). Is this due to some major lack of supply in Texas? What's the reason behind it?

As somebody who recently interviewed all around the Austin Area, there are pretty much NO jobs in Austin, and the ones that are, don't pay that much.

That being said, Texas in general has a shortage, and does tend to pay better than average. I think it's a combination of high need in rural areas, and a brain drain that happened previously due to malpractice concerns, which has since been rectified (Texas now has A+ malpractice environment).

There's a huge need for EM physicians down in south Texas and our group pays really well. But a ton of people want to live in Austin so I think the market is saturated w/ EM docs.

Yeah, good luck finding a high-paying dream gig in Austin. Perhaps Temple/Killeen/Waco (also central Texas).

Just like the rest of the world, more desirable living condition tends to equals less pay. Austin area tends to make less than DFW/San Antonio/Houston, and all those areas tend to make less than other major cities such as Corpus, Laredo, Longview, El Paso, Abilene, Amarillo, Midland/Odessa, etc.

Many of the 'Austin' jobs are actually commutable from Austin (up to an hour or so away) at smaller places. As others said, I think its difficult to land a gig at a major Austin hospital and you are not going to make 450k/year working reasonable hours.

Good Luck.

I know Austin very well. Pretty saturated. You need to know someone to get in.

Everywhere else you can find jobs for 400K working 15 days easy.

If you are able to get into the austin market and make partner, you can pull in 400k for 15 days
