I admittedly have not researched this all too well, but after paying over $1500 for step 2 cs this has been on my mind. They have to be making a ton of money off of this not to mention even more from their 3 other mandatory tests and from their for charge practice tests. Based on my quick google search it seems they are very non transparent about their finances and that of course the president of this non profit makes over a million a year.

What seems the most fishy to me is that after the movement to end cs for AMGs due to a high pass rate the pass rate magically fell to 90%...

What do you guys think?

Tread carefully here. I heard of a guy who knows a guy that was bringing up this point only to one day shoot himself in the back of the head, twice.

In all seriousness, NBME is opportunistic and their argument is to ensure that graduates will be clinically competent--although MD/DO schools already go through processes that ensure that the curriculum at said schools will develop competent physicians. It definitely seems like wasteful spending, but I'm sure NBME doesn't complain when they get them checks. It is what it is and it is neither unequivocally necessary for developing a safe physician nor cheap for students who are already in hefty debt.

I've thought it too. They've continued to turn me off year after year.

Three step exams and CS seems excessive. Especially step 3. I'd like to see CS and possibly step 3 gone.

Also, they seem to screw over students in other ways. I heard a student applied for extended timing due to medical reasons, and was told to not schedule their exam until it was approved. Then the NBME never responded back. Rather then rejecting the extended time request up front, they made the student wait until they couldn't push their exam back any further and just had to take it normal time.

I just assume they're one of the many dysfunctional parts of this broken healthcare system. Not the first time I've seen testing companies take advantage of the education system. It seems to be becoming a problem in public schools too.

This is all opinion of course. I really have no idea how the NBME functions, and they may not be so bad. But they def haven't made a good impression on me.

How many exams do PA/NP take? Do they have a clinical skills exam?

You can see their tax returns. I'd advise another Google search on the subject if you have any doubts.
