A publication of mine was recently accepted and was wondering when/if I should update schools that I have an upcoming interview scheduled at. I believe I am able to submit updates through the portals but does make any difference if I send the update before or after the interview date? If anyone has any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unless you've been awarded a Rhodes scholarship or equivalent, I would bet that update letters don't move the needle on decision-making.

Unless it is MMI, you are likely to have the opportunity to tell your interviewer of the up-date, have the opportunity to talk about the paper, and have this conversation end up in the write-up of your interview. Then you can send an up-date after the interview with a "thank you for the opportunity to interview and as mentioned to Dr. __, my paper titled, "xyz" has been accepted for publication in [journal name]."

If the school does MMI, I'd suggest sending the update the day after the interviews (or later the same day if time allows) so that it is likely to be seen before decisions are made regarding offers & waitlists.

While it might not move the needle, it certainly shows that you have been productive.

That is great advice! Thank you! I will hold off sending any update until after the interview in that case.

Hi there,

As others have answered this question, I will add what has not been mentioned. If you expect that you will have more things to update upon, it may be a good idea to wait so that you can include it all in one letter, rather than sending too many letters. You can of course include it in your thank you letter, which should be send out 1-3 days after your interview.

And for your top school of choice, you can send a letter of intent/interest and can include this update within that letter. This, however, should only be sent to one school. Essentially this letter will state that if you are accepted to this school you will accept the invitation as they are your top choice. We usually suggest sending a letter of intent around one month after your interview. This letter can be helpful for the committee in deciding who to send out those last acceptances to, and therefore is a great idea if you are sure you will accept the invite. You can add your update within that letter (after you thank them for the interview and reiterate your interest and commitment).

Best of luck!
