Hey guys, I have a quick question. Currently, I am volunteering at the hospital where my job is to go to the rooms of each patient and have them sign up for an online account for the hospital. I just talk to them, room-to-room and explain what the website is (allows patients to view summaries, make appointments, etc). Would this count as clinical experience? I see the physician oftenly and I also get help with communicating with patients too.

I've always considered clinical experience to be anything that helps you better understand what patient care is all about, thus validating your career choice and giving you insight into your own motivations for the profession. It doesn't have to always be helping someone with a bedside thoracotomy to count. If you can spin your experience to cover that ground, then you might have a case. I know plenty of hospital volunteers that distribute books or wheel patients out to their cars when they're discharged -- they seem to count that as clinical experience.t

That said, I'm just a doctor, not a medical student admissions committee member.

I am in agreement with typhoonegator. Are you working with patients and providing a service to them? Do you collaborate with other members of the healthcare team (doctors, nurses, etc.)? Do you get to observe the relationships between these people? Then I would think yes- clinical! If you have some shadowing experience on top of this, I think it's great.
