I've been recently made a trainer at my job and am basically given a new employee (whenever we hire ) to shadow me during several shifts and show them the ropes (We teach them as we are working). The trainer's label also makes us pretty much the go-to people during a shift if there are any questions to be answered if the managing staff is not immediately present. Does this count as leadership experience or does leadership experience entail being part of the hierarchy of a club or organization of some sort?

I would consider this a leadership experience.

I do something similar. Do you mention it in passing in the EC box? I don't know if I could make this a separate entry since for the most part they are just following me as I do my own tasks and then I'll sometimes take out a minute or two to show them how to do something.

Often a leadership experience is included in the same entry as the EC, job, or volunteer position, along with description and a date the role was added. Mention of the responsibility can be added to the name you give the activity to bring more attention to it. If you wanted to use a dedicated Leadership space, you'd need to keep a log of leadership hours, have a Contact who will attest to them, and not double count the time in another entry.

The whole nonsense about "leadership experience" is a ridiculous construct, imo. If you act like a leader and take command of situations as they present themselves in your life, then thats enough; sometimes leadership is more about how you conduct yourself when the world isn't watching.

You don't need to go out of your way to get elected Secretary of the Biology Club, just to show an adcom you're a leader.

Except it can be very hard to prove unless you have some formal position to back it up. I'm not saying it's necessitary to have a formal leadership position but, it's going to make demonstrating it much easier.

But as to the OP, crew trainer is absolutely leadership if you are doing it right.

Crap I don't think I remember the date I was given this added responsibility 🙁. Should I just not mention it if it looks weird to not mention the the start date of the "leadership" aspect?

It's a leadership experience in the real world, definitely counts.

If you recall the year or the semester or the season it started, a vague reference to a start date is OK to use, since precision won't be needed like it is for the official start and end date spaces of the job.
