I'm so confused. I read other posts talking about how there's such a huge influx of doctors that their pay is going down, and there's not as much need. Then I read posts like this . . . So what is it? Is there a need for more doctors, or are there too many? Such conflicting information . . . 😕

It's not like adcoms are going to read this article and then open the floodgates to a ton of applicants. You know how we operate - we only deal with a problem when it smacks us in the face - therefore, we probably won't deal with this problem until about 2024.

This isn't about getting into med school, it's about being in high demand afterwards.

Kah-ching! :meanie: It's nice having a job that pretty much can't get outsourced.

You should have read the troll where this one guy was saying that all expensive medical procedures will be outsourced to India (That is, patients will go to India and get them done). He probably scared some aspiring surgeons.

Outsourced to India? I doubt it.

I really doubt it. We get pissed when we find out our bank's customer service is actually in India. Radiology is one thing, but I don't think many americans will go overseas. Foreign grads and patients from all over the world come here for a reason.

I think many people have misconceptions about Indian physicians. First off, those who make it into med school in India are quite good (do you think getting into Med school in North America is tough? ya right, try India).

Second they are cheaper than doctors in NA, and most seem to be of good calibre.

Third, in Canada some procedures are being outsourced to places like Germany for those who don't want to wait for a hip replacement surgery.

Will all expensive procedures be sourced...probably not, maybe only 2-5% at most.

However people considering outsourcing should tell us that maybe our medical system isn't working as well as it should (well actually it probably didn't take this event to come to this conclusion...) and maybe we need to change our medical coverage.

Great Point !!! 👍
The top medical school in India, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) takes an average of 35 people a year. Roughly 20,000 applicants apply every year. umm..... I wonder if they are competent physicians. Or may be not, just becuase they are educated outside the US. 🙄

When I took the test for Medical school in India(a century ago), there were 25000 applicants for 500 spots, in my state. I would imagine those who got in were pretty darn smart. 😀 x

I pity some people who are judgemental about other countries. There is life beyond America. Just stop watching Fox News and you will be fine. Let us remind people around here, that the oldest form of medicine, ayurveda, started in India, thousands of years before the allopathic system was even thought of.

The first technologically driven heart surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, was performed by an Indian doctor. 30% of the world renowned Cleveland Clinic's heart facility are Phsycians of Indian origin.
Get the point

I can continue this list until my battery dies, but I don't want to put down or boost a culture here, but I want to point out that part of being a good physician is to remove yourself from the 'uneducated' masses and look at life from a more human and culturally sensitive perspective. Remember that med school essay - you probably described yourself as 'compassionate' 🙄

Learn to respect others and they will respect you. Do not bitch about others and moan when they bitch about you. (Basic rule of life :meanie: )

There's no reason to give credit to just one country, and we're not just thinking about ourselves. Medicine may have started in India, but many different cultures, countries and religions contributed to the advancement of medicine.

I don't want to sound arrogant, but people from around the world come to America because it has the best facilities and doctors. That says something. Anyway, I just wanna say that outsourcing probably won't happen and if it does...it sure isn't a good sign of the medical system in America as fever5 said.
