Hi, I have a relative who applied to about 10 dental schools, including VCU, U of Maryland, and BU. They had:
3.8 gpa
3.8 sgpa
low 20s on DAT
research experience

Does it make any sense that they did not get one interview?

I forgot to mention that they applied in mid-late August.

well there has to be come other red flags that we do not know. Based on those, there should be 8-10 acceptances. Something is obviously up.. I doubt the person just slipped through the cracks.

Is a major in Biology a turn-off? I personally don't know anything about dental school.

Yeah, I'm thinking it has to be the rec letters, because they have had a job for three years and a dental research internship for two.

If you want an honest evaluation then you have to present the whole story. Numbers are only part of the game, there is a reason you have so much to fill out on the applications.

It makes sense. Schools get a lot of applicants. Academics are great, but many schools require a well rounded person, not just one with good grades and research experience. This is likely why some get 5 interviews with a 3.1 and average DAT scores. There is more to it.

It seems most people in dental school were bio majors. LORs could be an issue but I'm not sure that would be the one thing that would scream out at me. If someone is going to write an LOR, usually they will be honest and tell the student if they can't write a good one.

No one knows for sure but ADCOMs but it makes as much sense as anything else in the app process.

This isn't true for all schools, but it certainly is for VCU. The earlier you apply, the better your shot esp at rolling admissions schools. Early means June LATEST. VCU sends out round 1 of their interview invites mid-August. I'll wager many schools do that.

Have your 'relative' call the schools and ask them the status of the application. Also, ask them if they see anything that needs to be improved upon or strikes them as negative in the application... they will probably tell you.

I had a friend call (med school) and they told him that he had a professor write him a negative LOR (I know this woman and was not at all surprised). This pretty much screws you over at every school you apply to. You don't want to not find this out and re-apply next year without making necessary changes to the application.

Just call.

This could definitely be true as well as a personal statement that is really bad.
