Hey everyone,
I am in the Air Force and have received 45 credits of Russian Language (finished 310-302 sequence) due to my job. All of my credits transferred to the university I am attending. So here is my question; seeing as how I only have 3 semesters left till I get a BA in Russian, do dental schools really not care what your undergraduate is in? Russian will not be that helpful in dentistry because no one really speaks it. opinions/thoughts?

Doesn't matter as long as you have the necessary pre-req classes

I think in some ways it is an advantage because most people will have science degrees. You will stand out, and to answer your question, no it doesn't matter what your degree is in. As long as you take all of the Pre-requisites, do well on the DAT, and have good GPA's you'll be fine. 3.5 science and cumulative GPA with around a 20 DAT score are pretty average these days. Good luck!

Russian is classified a level 3 foreign language by the DoD, correct? Let that speak for itself! 🙂

I did an internship with a dentist who got his BA in Russian. He got in to several dental schools no problem.

Majored in history myself. I had several interviewers say they enjoyed seeing applicants with educational backgrounds other than the main sciences. Just do well in the pre reqs and you'll be good to go!

It may depend on the school at times. I know that some schools pride themselves in that they have a wide range of students with different areas of excellence. I am a science major and feel that it was an advantage in taking the DAT and will give me a leg up the first year in dental school. With that being said, you can major in anything, and as long as you do well in pre-req classes, you have proven that you can handle those classes and dental schools will be happy.

Do the BA in whatever you like as long as you have the science prereqs done. There's no advantage to having a Bio degree.

The only advantage I can see in having a biology degree is that you'll have been exposed to more upper division science classes, and these may or may not help you better able to cope with the classes you'll be taking in dental school. Other than that, a biology degree is useless, and if you aren't too good at those sciences, it can hurt your GPA and hurt your chances of getting accepted.

If I had advice to give undergraduates, I would tell them to either 1) pick an easy major you can 4.0, or 2) pick a marketable major that will be able to get you a decent job if the pre-health route doesn't pan out. Sure you'll have to take more classes to get the prerequisites done, but those routes seem the best to me.

I think it would've been cool to major in Anthropology...but maybe I've just been watching too many Bones episodes. 🙂

Look ofcourse they care but as long as you have the prereq you should be fine. No reason Russian can't be useful in the future.
