So far, I've decided I want to be a mixed vet (large and small) but I was curious if this information goes onto the application or if you decide later after you've taken classes. if anyone knows, that'd be great!

From what I remember, VMCAS never explicitly asks what kind of vet you want to be but you are definitely encouraged to talk about that in your personal statement. Some of the schools' supplemental apps definitely do ask.

Keep in mind though that just because you put you want to be a mixed animal vet on your app doesn't mean it is written in stone. Lots of people change their mind in vet school.

^^^^^^^ haha, more concise, i like it 😀

Many of the schools will ask you on supplemental applications what area of veterinary medicine you're interested in, and you can certainly write it into your personal statement, but if you are stating an interest in a field that specifically you should have a strong background in that area as well.

However, plenty of people change their mind about it once they are in school, and a DVM degree itself leads to a wide variety of careers and is on its own nonspecific to an area, though some schools do "tracking" where you tend to focus on one area. Even at those schools, though, you will get the same degree whether you track in large animal or small animal or whatever.

Nobody expects you to be 100% sure of your area of vet med when you enter, to sum it up.

to tag onto this topic:

I know I am at least 2 years off from even applying (damn having to go back to school for a 2nd bachelors to get my pre-reqs) but I would REALLY like to reserve this decision until after I have a few years of vet school under my belt. As of right now my though process goes something like this: dogs and cats are great, and if I get to work a small animal clinic I think I would enjoy it, emergency really peaks my interest at this current point in time, and last but certainly not least I have always been fascinated by large animals (big cats, bears, etc) and certainly wouldn't hate working at Disney's Animal Kingdom or a zoo or something like that. BUT for all I know once I get into school and start working with horses I'll fall in love, you know?

Do they look down on applicants who make a strong point of NOT steering themselves towards one type of vet over the others?
