Does undergraduate research help in getting a residency?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Typically no .Has to be in med school. Pubs in undergrad can be used but i heard it is not weighed as heavily as med school pubs

Publications are publications. Stuff that is related to your specialty of choice matters more.

"Research experiences" from undergrad that didn't lead to publications aren't gonna carry much if any weight. But if you're published, those speak for themselves regardless of where you are in school.

Your academic record will follow you wherever you go, as long as you remain in academia. A paper published in 2007 is going to still matter in 2027. People won't care as much if your paper isn't in the field, but it's still going on your CV.

As someone who has interviewed lots of residency applicants I totally agree with the comment below. Publications are publications. Amazing research experiences from undergrad might still be worth a mention if they were meaningful.

As others have said, yes, it’s still helpful for residency- especially if you’re productive. I listed all my research experiences on ERAS, from high school to medical school, and it was asked about and highlighted at multiple interviews.

Even in high school? Were you published in high school?
