Does waitlist movement seem abnormally slow this year?

This was discussed a bit over in the panic thread but I'd like to see if everyone else feels this way as well. For my schools, it seems like there was no real rush of movement after May 15. The two big waitlist movement schools (NYMC, EVMS) didn't experience the big movement like they did in previous years. Only a few people have been trickling in.

So what gives? Is it just me or has anyone else felt like movement is slower than normal this year?

It has seemed slower than I expected. Its really school dependent though....

There has been an increase in applications, more people applying broadly, and maybe some schools over accepted this year. It has been slow, but give it another 2-3 weeks. If little happens by then, then guess it has been an abnormal cycle.

I called my top choice recently and was told that the movement is expected to start next week.

Maybe people are not reporting movement as much as they did previously. Or our worst nightmare, not much movement at all.😡

I feel like waitlist movement is always slow until you get that acceptance.

True. That's why I wonder if it's an actual effect happening or just my distorted perception from sitting in limboland for so long.

Yea, when I was waitlisted, all of my friends told me not to worry bc there is usually quite a bit of movement on the waitlist. If there's movement, there's barely any and it's killing me.

My top school, which I called this morning, said they are slow this year (on the administrative side of getting things together). n=1.

I agree. The school where I was pulled seems to be pulling a ton of people, but everywhere else, there's been only a few people pulled (at least, of the people reporting on SDN). Really strange.

Did they say why? Did they just over-accept more than usual?

No, in fact, they said they were "especially conservative" - they're just slow getting their list together and emailing everyone. Memorial day is delaying things further. I had begun to lose hope (I'm losing neurons with all the fear/stress/sadness with waiting) but this made me slightly more optimistic.

It's understandable - they do have quite a bit of work to do.

Same here man. My school is already in the mid 20's

It's good to know I'm not the only one feeling crazy about waiting. This oddly makes me feel better...

I completely forgot about memorial day! Maybe everyone is busy making plans for the long weekend that they put us on the backburner! One can only hope.

Good luck, everyone. 🙂

I know how hard the wait is guys, but hang in there! These things go in cycles. All the people who were accepted off the waitlist on or around May 15th now have two weeks to decide, so it's very likely more seats will be opening up towards the end of next week. The other important thing to remember is that a lot of people aren't on SDN, and there's also a huge amount of people who read SDN but never post, or never post about acceptances/waitlists/rejections, so there is probably a lot more waitlist movement going on than it looks like here.

Here's some good news: I've even seen some rejections over the last couple of weeks from some SDNers, but you are still on the waitlist! Don't give up hope! Also, if you're on waitlists, please send the schools updates and/or letters of interest - let them know why you're great for their program and what you will contribute to their med school community! I definitely think these letters really can put you over the edge.

Good luck to you all! :luck:
