Does Wayne State accept C- in pre-reqs? What about Pass/Fail classes?

Hi,

I emailed Wayne State but got directed to their school's premed advisor's website...I thought you are only supposed to use that if you are a Wayne State student... Anyways, does anyone know if Wayne State will accept a pre-req if I got a C- in it? What about if it's a Pass/Fail class? Please, if anyone have first-hand experience about this (i.e. currently enrolled in Wayne State who had a C- in a pre-req when applying), would you mind commenting below? Thanks!

Thanks, but isn't it pretty much midnight everywhere in the US right now and you just got off the phone with them about this exact question...? Hmmm....
And uh...weren't you the one who wrote a lot of angry stuff because someone called you a premed?
No offence (because I don't want you to freak out on me) but second opinions?

Did you email WSU undergrad or the SOM?

I have never heard of a US MD SOM accepting P/F or C- grades for prereqs.

I emailed the medical school. The other school I interviewed at accepts C- (since it's a pass) but I'm just not sure if Wayne State does as well.

If you're getting a C- in a pre-req class, you have WAY bigger problems than if one school will or won't accept it.

I just got accepted to Wayne this cycle and had a C- in Physics I.
I did have an A- in the lab, and then I got an A in Physics II and lab.

I am also a reinvention student, so that probably helped. Either way, a C- in a pre-req class was not an automatic rejection.

Uh no, a C- in one class doesn't make someone a bad student. In my case, it was a physics class from 7 years ago and I have 3.95 in my last 2 years with a 37 MCAT (98th percentile on the physical sciences section). Wayne gave me an interview because I worked my ass off to get to where I am, so there is no need to act like one bad mark makes someone a bad student or whatever it is you are implying.

Thanks! This is good to know. Out of curiosity, did you ever contact the school to see if the C- will be accepted?
Congrats on the acceptance. I'm dreaming for mine.

No, I had not contacted them beforehand.
Also, if you received an II already then it means that they are able to look past the C-. If they did not accept it they would not have invited you to interview.

I was under the impression that pre-reqs will not be counted as fulfilled if you pass/fail them.

I agree. One bad grade in a pre-req that is irrelevant to being a good doctor does not mean someone has "WAY bigger problems" to worry about. That's the type of post that contributes to real life people in the medical field saying to stay away from SDN.

If you got an interview with them knowing that you have that C- then you should be fine. I know several med students at Wayne and a couple of them are there with a missing pre-req course. So I don't think they are super strict as long as the rest of your transcript is good. If you get accepted I would set up an advising appointment with the med school to make sure they don't want you to retake it. Make sure you get it in writing!

Thanks for all the input guys. I ended up calling and they said they'll accept the C- and the pass/fail 🙂
