Does your class have a "Shhhsh" Section?

You mean while the prof is talking?

We get this every once in awhile. I find the sushing to me much more rude than the talking.

We did have someone send out an email today to complain about people whispering in class. It was an incredibly bad lecture, about half the class had already left. Same sort of thing...I thought the email was more rude than the talking.

Honestly, the way I see it, if I spend the time to actually go to class it's because I think I can cut future studying time by my attendance (thus the reason I rarely if ever attend). Hence, even if the lecture blows monkey chunks, I will sit there and pay attention because it's an hour of my time that could have been spent in bed or watching TV or exercising. If I pay attention in lecture I can recover that hour later. If I talk, fall asleep, check SDN then I'm gonna have to make it up at some point. I rarely, if ever, shush people, but I'm always grateful when someone else does.

The problem with the "Shhsh Squad" is that they are constantly shshing. If the professor cracks a joke a lot of people will laugh but you can count on the Shhsh Squad to immediately shhhsh the laughter.

I think they are huge douchebags.

Is lecture mandatory? If not, then just don't attend and you will never have to come in contact with this section. Problem solved.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. That is besides the point. The point is that shhshing is something that should be left in middle school (As should being loud in class when the professor is talking).

yeah-our shhsh squad is so loud...sometimes I'll be at the complete opposite end of the lecture hall and it'll still be so loud I can't hear the prof.

Last term I got fed up, the prof was fed up-and visiting, so not much courage-so I stood up said 'scuse me' to the prof and loudly but politely said "I beg your pardon, but when all'y'all are shhshing and tallking and whispering and carrying on and shshing the shhshers no one else can hear the prof-and the prof can't even hear himself so, if you don't like the noise then don't add to it. we're in University here, not KINDERGARTEN"

Huge chuckle from all but the five or so assorted shusshers. Prof was pleased as punch.

Shshhing has all but ceased in classes that I'm in.

I think they're afraid of me. They found out that I'm not as young as I look and I'm ex-Army and my friend calls me the "trained killer" (cause I'm the one that takes care of spiders, mosquitos, lizards, etc-for the 6'4" MAN, not cause I"m some sniper-but they don't know how I got the nickname)

Sometimes it's nice to be the oldest and have the little ones fear you. Muwahahaaaa.

I feel the same way as you do. I don't have balls to shush people, so I'm really thankful for some people reminding those perticular students who just can't shut up to know their place!!

Really though, no one really cares about what those people are blubbing during the class time, not me, not even the people they are talking to....

Well, those perticular shushers distract me.

People who have their own private conversations while lecture is going on piss me off. I mean why even show the F*** up to class. We all paid our money to attend medical school so if you are not interested in what the professor is saying just leave the calss and stop being a punk! One time I was in lecture and there was a group of 3 maybe 4 guys talking while lecture was going on and you could tell they were the kind of "bright minds" that would ignor a shhhhh. So I just looked over and said in a clear voice (not quite yelling but I am sure I was heard), "What the hell, will you guys shut up. I am trying to listen to the lecture and not your stupid jokes!" There were chuckles and a few thank yous and the guys stopped talking. These "winners" who think that people show up to lecture to listen to anybody but the proffessor are out of their mind. I guess the point here is you shouldn't have to be told to shut the hell up because acting like that is the kind of thing that should have been left in middle school. That's my two cents. Good times.😀

psst. it's not "fear" that keeps them quiet. I can't even imagine feeling any degree of intimidation from a medical student. it's the "oh great, another loud/pushy nontrad" eyeroll.

you see, when I was in the BUSINESS world I learned the VALUE of making my FEELINGS KNOWN *emails entire class* *emails entire class* *emails entire class*

ps. the shushers also suck.
pss. i'm not saying all nontrads, but the loud/pushy people who always demand what's "their right" seem to be mostly drawn from that crew. I'm sure they complain about where "their tax dollars" are going in their spare time.

I really have no issue with people laughing at a prof's jokes. It's the "whispering" (if it can be called that) and the blatant talking that get me.

surebrec, you're right, our shushers suck.

and so do the loud kids. it wouldn't be so bad if some of the kids in our class would learn to whisper.

but yeah, the shushing annoys me more.

The middle school level action of talking in class demands a middle school level response. I cannot believe that someone who is talking through a lecture thinks that someone else is rude for letting them know that they would actually like to listen to said lecture in no uncertain terms. If you want to talk, LEAVE!!

I dont talk. Talking in class is rude. However, going "shhhsh" everytime the volume goes up a little (usually in response to something the lecturer said) is just ridiculous.

 at this thread. Yeah surebreC, our shhhshers are always on cue man. I think it really got bad after that Physiology prof. berated us like little children that one day. He was all like "when its time to start class ya'll need to shutup, this is not high school anymore 😛 " what a joke! Anyways his 30 second b|tch session must've scared enough folk, and what resulted was the shhhhsers!!!

Hmm, looks like someone is afraid of the nontrads in his/her class and has to be defensive about it. 🙂

But seriously, as you get older, get stepped on by "the system" a few more times in one way or another (as everyone does), understand that when you pay for something, you have the right to demand the other party fulfill their side of the bargain, etc... you may also learn to come out swinging when someone f*cks with your rights.

Secondly, you won't give a **** what the younger "kids" think about whether you stand up and say what you think or not. They (and you, probably) will learn, eventually, and become the same way in a class full of shusshers.

Man.. either y'alls lectures must really suck, or something is wrong with the students. Here, we are pretty quiet for the most part, so no shushing is even required.

Haven't your classmates mastered the art of writing a note?

lol, I was there for that lecture. Personally, I thought the lecturer was being a little melodramatic - no one really knew he was lecturing until his hissy fit.

FWIW, I'm one of the "older kids", and I see both sides of the argument. I don't really like the loud kids making a ruckus, but the shushers make just as much or more ruckus when they start their shushing. Too much talking, too much shushing. I kind of abide by the "come to class to pay attention, or don't come to class" maxim.

And yeah, I was there for that lecture too. I also didn't know class had started until I was getting yelled at. Great way to start the hour.😡

during physiology lecture:

girl behind me: "are you going to the toga party tonite?"
girl next to her: "omg totally, I feel like being naked!"
then they start cackling.

i didnt shush them cause im not a shusher, im more of a subtle look giver. i whisper in class too sometimes..but come on..spare me the ******edness and the cackling.

We have some shuushers, and it's usually a pretty balanced system. However sometimes the class is just laughing at a prof's joke and so they start shuushing immediately while NOTHING IS BEING TAUGHT.

To quell this, we have a renegade shuusher who will start hysterically shuushing the class as a satire. Or a good shuush in reply to a ******ed, unneccessary shuush.

We had major shuushing going on this afternoon, but it was so completely deserved! It was the back section folk (who I have nothing against), but they do tend to be a bit rowdier.

Anyway the professor had his PPT up on the screen, had hit Record for his mic and was standing dead center, looking up and started into his Intro (not rambling, but the real start of his lecture). They were being LOUD, the kind of rudeness that makes me embrassed by proxy. I don't shush but I was real glad when a couple people piped up. And the noisy section shut right down, so it was good. Our shushers are usually very reasonable and only rarely exercise their disapproval.

Wait until you guys get a dressing-down from Dr. LeDoux.

I used to send tacit prayers of thanks for our shushers. Vive le difference.

BTW, shhshing is COMPLETELY OK if it is done in response to a Balkie question.

Well, I have shusshed a few times in my life and I don't regret it. If I have to listen to a few people talking through the entire four hours of lecture day after day - then you know? I am going to snap eventually and do the shush.

I think it is completely insane to come to a crowded lecture hall for medical school - medical school, I mean, this is an intense, difficult experience for many people - and then sit and chit-chat garbage with your seat mates. I have never seen people talk as much in class as I have in med school. Not in grammar school, high school or college. I have actually NEVER seen it tolerated anywhere. Period. And I mean, PERIOD!

So, why do a few immature students suddenly feel that now at age 24 or whatever, they are allowed to talk social business in lecture. I think it is immature and disrepectful to other classmates and the lecturer. What surprises me most is that lecturers don't tell them to shut up, and maybe they should be more like our third grade teachers and say something to embarrass the whisperers/talkers. 😡 Paws is tired from third year rotations, but still this used to bug me from lecture ...

If people talk in class, they deserved to be shushed.

I've considered bringing a small squirt gun and shooting the people who speak out of turn. It may not work, and it may be silly, but it would bring me enormous satisfaction. Probably moreso than shushing another person.
