Does your fellowship provide tail coverage?

Hi,

I could really use your help with feedback on this one.

Does or did your fellowship provide tail coverage for you when you leave? If so, then how much coverage? Is it the same as the coverage you had throughout the year? Should it be?

My last day of fellowship is today and I'm working out the details of the issue today. My contract said they would provide tail coverage, but did not specify how much. The program director has said now, he will only provide the minimum which is 100/300 for $7,065. Throughout the year I was covered with 1/3 million, which for tail coverage would cost $15,179.

Please advise with your experience.
 
Usually the medical malpractice and tail coverage from an academic center is from a Grade C or D insurance company (which is not good). Most hospitals you will obtain privileges (privates) will need better malpractice carriers (Grade B or higher). Do some research on insurance carriers in your state, and buy your own malpractice. That is what I did after my fellowship. 😉
 
Many large academic centers are self insured and offer a per incident coverage. This isnt really tail coverage technically, but functions the same, as you should be insured indefinitely for any incident that occurred as a resident/fellow.
 
The fellowship was actually in a private setting. Does this change your opinion?

I just think it seems unjust that they lowered my coverage from 1/3million during the year to 1/3 hundred-thousand on the tail to save some money.

Would you think so as well?

You are the little fish, compared to the big players whoa re your fellowship and your upcoming employer.

Why not have THEM negotiate, and work something out? At the very least, even if yoiu get stuck paying the 8G difference, you might be able to pay it off with pre-tax dollars, and in a best case scenario, the new group/hospital might convince the fellowship to foot SOME of the bill.
