I'm currently an anesthesiology resident and need help deciding if pain is right for me. I haven't done a pain rotation yet so I'll have a better idea then but any insight from those with experience would be helpful. I would like to join a private practice and eventually either become a partner or establish my own place if the business aspect is not too much of a headache. Considering salaries right now in GA, that would be my second option if not pain. The idea of going home and leaving work at work is very appealing but I don't think that's possible in pain. I'm interested in North Tx area and from what I read online, it seems like the market is very saturated there for pain. I don't mind grinding, talking to patients, doing notes, but I would like to be compensated accordingly. I've seen docs with their own clinics and it seems like they are always grinding on the business side even though they don't work nights, weekends, or take call. Any insight would be appreciated.

you can leave work at work with pain, but you might not be able to leave work at work if you want to be an owner, regardless of your profession.

if you want to make lots of money, regardless of your job, you have to grind. if you want a good 8-5 job no weekends or nights, very few calls, then pain is better than gas. otoh, you can take weeks and weeks of vaca in gas and not worry about a thing, whereas a pain doc cant just up and leave his/her practice and do the same.

do your rotation. i had no interest in pain when i started anesthesiology (as a side note, i had worked for many years in ER so my interactions with chronic pain patients were not, well, encouraging).

maybe ask some of the pain docs on this forum - there are some on here who are located in Georgia - if you can shadow them for a day or two.
