Dog in med school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
People get married and have kids during med school. You can have a dog. It'd be easier if its an outdoor dog.

It'd be easier if they were outside kids, too!

I have a big indoor dog that I had before starting med. school and he is awesome. I wouldn't trade him for anything. He does take some time and energy but it's good because he forces me to take short breaks to take him on a short walk - but I get some fresh air and exercise. I also take him to the dog park and bring my notes along and study while he runs around. I even study while we walk sometimes....with notecards in hand.

I wouldn't get a dog that needs house-training though. That takes so much time so try to get an adopted dog that is already house-broken or something.

I'm sharing a house with another dog owner and it's definitely the way to go. We've got huge, athletic, well-behaved boys who can hold it 12 hours on a bad day. (A mostly black lab and a mostly Swiss.) On a good day they have each other and both the humans and it's a happy happy world.

But I'm premed in the Pacific Northwest. If I go to med school in NY or Boston, I would find a better home for my dog. And I'd maybe lean towards a rural-ish school, if I have the choice.
