Hey there, I'm a PGY-1 Pharmacy resident looking at specialized PGY-2 programs in Emergency Medicine. My current program doesn't have any sort of call requirement, so I'm rarely at the hospital longer than 14 hours or so at a time.

I am looking at some programs for next year that do have overnight in house call for pharmacy. I think this is great for us for exposure and education - but how do you all deal with 30 hour shifts if you have a dog?

I have a 6y/o extremely well behaved Corgi. Most of these programs requiring call are in pretty big cities, so I imagine it will be easier to find a dog walker. But what about the overnights - if you live alone do you put them in a kennel or what? I may consider a roommate for the difference in cost of living, but I haven't lived with anyone in like 4 years. Plus asking them to take care of my dog (it would only be like Q7 or Q10) could add stressors there.

Thanks!

You might try to find a "co-owner" -- someone who is interested in having a dog part time when you are on call. Try Craig's list, maybe, or put up a sign at a pet supply store or vet in your new location. If your dog is well-behaved, this might be a cheaper and more humane way to go than kennel life...

Depending on the size city you'll be moving to then a "professional" dog walker would be a great idea. Even see if one of the faculty has a high school kid that might want a few bucks to walk your dog at night and feed him and then take him out again in the morning. Shouldn't be a huge deal if it's that infrequently.
