I am going into my third year of the Bachelor of Science (Major in Biology) come September. Last year, I was going through some personal issues (my grandfather whom I am very close to had to be admitted into the hospital and a close uncle of mine passed away last year) so this broke my concentration and I thought it would be a good idea to drop some courses just for that term. Anyway, as a result of dropping those courses (some of them were pre-requisites for upper-level courses), I will have to graduate in five years instead of four years for the BSc program. It doesn't show on my transcript that I dropped those courses, and I didn't receive a grade of "W". I will be taking those courses again this year.

Will it look bad that I will be graduating from the BSc program in 5 years instead of 4 since so many people finish in four years? Thanks.

no, 5th years are normal for science major like us, i mean it is normal at my school.

Also, is it rare for people to get accepted into dental school without a degree? I will be writing my DAT in November, and I will be applying for the 2010 cycle. I will be finishing my fourth year by then.

I'm on the same boat as you, but even worse. At least 6 years instead of 4 or 5. I was put back to remedial classes in math. I have to go all the way to calculus 3 for a biology major. Its going to take at least 6 years the least if I pass all my class. However, I only have 5 classes left for pre-dental. Also the first 2 1/2 years I didn't have a car so I had to get a ride with other people. It was pretty hard picking the classes I want at the same schedule that my friend had. I ended up picking classes I didn't need such as micro/macro economics, sociology but only need psychology instead, and a bunch of other classes which I didnt need. I don't know will it look bad on my transcript when they sees it. It will take at least 6 instead of 4 years. I will also be 26 when I finally get my degree and finish with my pre dental classes. Is that bad guys? Do I even have a chance at applying, or they will see that I take 2 more years than the normal students.

I asked this question to many dental schools and the answer was: 5 years?? That's normal and it doesn't look bad at all. Some even mentioned, that it is good to take your time because by the time you reach dental school, you will be matured enough to do whatever...

5th year is no big deal.... especially since you have a valid reason.
The only way it could hurt you is if you only took less than 10 credit hours per semester....cause it dosnt really prove that you can handle a heavy course load.

I have no idea who comes up with rumors like these. No, spending an extra 1,2,3, years is not a bad thing. What counts is your dedication and commitment for the field. So no need to worry! 🙂

That is completely fine...like everyone said, you weren't slacking off and failing courses, you needed the time...

Sorry for your losses...🙁

This is such a relief. Thanks you guys!
