I don't really know anything about the away rotation process, but I presume most people do them for places that are their top choices to go to. I'm an M3, and there is a certain program that is in a city a sibling will soon be moving to which I'm interested in doing an away rotation at. However, this program is extremely competitive and my chances for interviewing there are slim to none. I'm just wondering, is it weird to schedule an away after interview season is over (say, Feb-April)? Just to get the experience at that hospital/city? Since I'm probably going to be staying with my sibling finances aren't an issue.

GO! Great opportunity to see how things are done else where. Sometimes it really makes you appreciate where you are.

Why not do it earlier and give yourself a shot of matching there? Work hard and impress them (and you still have the rest of M3 to beef up your application strength)

People do away rotations all the time after IV season but in my experience it usually is something lower stress in a field that they're not applying to.
