Hi Everyone,

I was wondering how doing research at another institution is viewed on applications and by your home program. I have plans to do 1 project at my school, but I may also work on a project at a nearby school with a better research reputation/opportunities. It kind of feels like betrayal to me, but I think the other program would give me a better shot at meaningful research/publication opportunities. Obviously I don't want to make enemies in my home department, but I know how important research is for ophtho, so I feel inclined to pursue the best research I can. Any thoughts?

You are not doing anything wrong, it will only be a problem when you are not able to show up to a meeting because the other project conflicts with your primary project at your home institution. So I would suggest, pick a project that is most high yield regardless of the institution, then put all of your effort into that project to make sure you 1) complete your project successfully, 2) make a good impression to your PI. Then if you feel you still have more time even after the dedicated time necessary for the first project, then take on the additional project at the other institution.

- no one cares, unless the other project conflicts with timing, meetings, and productivity with your primary project.
