what would be preferrable:

1) do research at the institution that you would prefer to do residency at?
2) do research/get a letter from a 'big name' in gas?

who are big names in the northeast?

also, how much of a boost do publications give applicants? Would 2-4papers in gas distinguish an applicant enough to get them into programs they otherwise wouldn't have gotten into?

thanks

HELLO OP.

According to http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2007.pdf.

NUMBER OF RESEARCH PROJECTS = MATCH PERCENTAGE (US Seniors only)
0 = 93.4%
1-5 = 93.7%
5+ = 100%

NUMBER OF PUBLICATIONS = MATCH PERCENTAGE (US Seniors only)
0 = 92.7%
1-5 = 94.4%
5+ = 97.6%

More than 5 seems to be the magic number that give you a slight advantage to your peers. This is a very small difference. You can match successfully with ZERO RESEARCH experiences (around 92-93% match rate).

Almost no applicants to anesthesiology programs have a publication in an anesthesia journal. So...2-4 is a bit of a high target.

Note that the "research experiences" quoted above include, over your LIFETIME, any poster presentations or published articles. Most students have at least 1-2 of these.
