So I interviewed here today and really like the facilities, faculty, etc, but my fiance will have to get a job in Knoxville. Many of the current students there said they never go to lecture because it is all streamed online. I am fine with doing this, and I understand the labs are mandatory. Is there anyone on here who goes to DCOM but lives in Knoxville and never goes to lecture? If so, can you tell me if you would do it all over again, and what kind of experiences you've had with it. TIA!

Edit: I meant to say "Going" instead of "Doing" in the title..

I did it for my second year, my brother did it for his first and second year. I went to class most of the time. Its a pain in the butt, but definitely doable. Gas budget was redic though... so be prepared for that.

Its a solid hour trip each way, honestly I would never do it. There are two people in my study group who have to make that trip, and they are always missing out on the later study sessions, group activities, etc because they need to allow extra driving time. Labs are very frequent in first year and there will always be other reasons you need to be at the school, so don't assume you'll be able to stay in Knox most of the time. Best advice is to avoid if possible.

Good luck on the interview results! :xf:

If the lectures are online, I don't plan on going. How many times per week is it mandatory to be there is what I guess I'm asking. Thanks again.

You say that now...

Here is our schedule for 1st semester. Next year might be different but probably not drastically so. Scroll to the bottom to see weeks we've already done. I would say on average we have lab about 3 times a week. In addition to that, there will be certain lectures that are required attendance (guest lectures or whatever), and others that you will want to go to because sometimes it is just better in person. There will also be fairly frequent exams, group meetings, group projects, events, etc etc etc that you will need to be here for. In addition to all that, you will *need* to do lots of individual time in the anatomy lab outside of class.

You can do whatever you want to do, but I'm telling you you're not going to be able to stay away from the school for very long. You're gonna be making that drive all the time whether you like it or not.

I know first year will be worse. Maybe I could room with somebody while I'm there and spend the other days in knoxville.

I am in my second year and currently live in Knoxville. Last year, I lived in Harrogate and I think for first year, that's definitely the route to go. For those that had spouses and kids, living in Knoxville first year and just sucking it up for the commute was preferred. For them though, waking at up at 5am was, well, normal what with 3 kids at home. I know one of my classmates had a girlfriend in Knox so they just got an apt there and then he lived at the univ Inn apts during the week....pricey? Absolutely, but if the fiance is working and you can swing it, I recommend that. It gives you a chance and reason to get out of town, but you still have a convenient place to stay (not sure of your age, but the Inn tends to be full of the younger people in the class, just FYI). You could also just rent a room somewhere in Harrogate for the weeknights and it would actually probably be cheaper than the Inn.

Once first semester passes, it's honestly not THAT bad. By that time, too, you've made friends that are willing to help you out and let you crash on couches if need be. This year, our guest lectures aren't technically required anymore. Assuming our attendance stays good on those days, we should be fine but I'm not sure how it stands for 2015 and future classes. I end up making the drive twice a week or so, staying at a friends once or twice a week. I always stay in Harrogate the night before exams so that I'm not rushed/stressed the morning of to get to campus.

All in all, I think if you have someone you're doing this for, the commuting that is, it makes it worthwhile. I moved to Knox so that my boyfriend could attend UT and find a job. If I were just on my own, I absolutely would not have moved here. However, you get used to the drive and there are ways to make use of the time- ie. some profs podcast lectures and you can put the recorded lectures onto an iPod if you're a strong audio learner.

If you have other specific questions, message me privately and I'm happy to help any way I can.

Attendence policy changes every year or two, and it's always because of something the class ahead of you did. You guys got off because of 2013's good behavior, but I'm sure your class will screw over 2015 for their second year, seeing how it's even your class' fault that mine had quizzes in OPP. 😉

OP, 2015 looks like it's a better-behaved class, so if you're in 2016, things should be alright after that first-semester hurdle. And you really should be in anatomy lab an hour or two daily, not just the days it's on the schedule.

Thanks guys (or gals). Sounds like this could be doable. Well I got the phone call from Dean Stowers yesterday, so this is a real possibility now! Grace, I looked on DCOMCO and saw rooms listed for $250 a month (utilities included) can't beat that! I'm excited about this program along with the integrated MBA program. Could definitely see myself making the trips up and down highway 33 this time next year.

haha that's funny. Haven't you heard? We're renegades! Leaving the anatomy lab dirty (if we even show up!), taking the 2nd year's SC rooms, writing rude messages on the dry erase boards... no telling what we'll do next! 😎
