I am in my second year and currently live in Knoxville. Last year, I lived in Harrogate and I think for first year, that's definitely the route to go. For those that had spouses and kids, living in Knoxville first year and just sucking it up for the commute was preferred. For them though, waking at up at 5am was, well, normal what with 3 kids at home. I know one of my classmates had a girlfriend in Knox so they just got an apt there and then he lived at the univ Inn apts during the week....pricey? Absolutely, but if the fiance is working and you can swing it, I recommend that. It gives you a chance and reason to get out of town, but you still have a convenient place to stay (not sure of your age, but the Inn tends to be full of the younger people in the class, just FYI). You could also just rent a room somewhere in Harrogate for the weeknights and it would actually probably be cheaper than the Inn.
Once first semester passes, it's honestly not THAT bad. By that time, too, you've made friends that are willing to help you out and let you crash on couches if need be. This year, our guest lectures aren't technically required anymore. Assuming our attendance stays good on those days, we should be fine but I'm not sure how it stands for 2015 and future classes. I end up making the drive twice a week or so, staying at a friends once or twice a week. I always stay in Harrogate the night before exams so that I'm not rushed/stressed the morning of to get to campus.
All in all, I think if you have someone you're doing this for, the commuting that is, it makes it worthwhile. I moved to Knox so that my boyfriend could attend UT and find a job. If I were just on my own, I absolutely would not have moved here. However, you get used to the drive and there are ways to make use of the time- ie. some profs podcast lectures and you can put the recorded lectures onto an iPod if you're a strong audio learner.
If you have other specific questions, message me privately and I'm happy to help any way I can.
