Don't apply to RVUCOM if you're poor?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Since RVUCOM is for profit, would it be a poor choice to apply to this school if you choose economically disadvantaged in AACOMAS application.

They'll get their money don't worry about that. This should not be a factor in your decision to apply.

Your financial situation only matters if you're unable to qualify for the mostly private loans that pay your tuition, from which RVU will eventually make a profit.

Your financial situation won't matter, but you should check out the Osteo forum before applying to RVU.

Hey chudat...

You should apply whereever you want. Tuition for RVU is around 40K and cost of attendance has been calculated to be between 65 and 69K for the class of 2013. Financial aid packages will cover all of this. You may be able to secure a scholarship through the school.

Quoted from the RVUCOM finacial aid page:
"Three scholarships have been established to advance the mission and vision of Rocky Vista University and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Our goals are to promote primary care practice, increase diversity among our student body and the osteopathic profession, increase access to health care for underserved populations, and increase the opportunity for underrepresented and often disadvantaged students to obtain an osteopathic medical education. The requirements of our scholarships are structured to assist in meeting these goals."

Your financial hardship does not make you less likely to matriculate at RVUCOM. In fact, you may find yourself more desireable to any school that focuses on underserved and disadvantaged students.

Hope this helps. Good luck.:luck:

Hey Paramediclizard,

Thank you very much for your reply. From the RVU class fourms, I see that you are quite knowledgeable regarding RVU. I really hope that being poor will not hinder my chances at RVU; it's actually one of my top schools that I really want to go to. However, with what's happening lately, it's kind of hard to believe that they have no preference for the wealthy. Can you explain a little bit of what's really going on with the school?

Also, are they a lot of Asians in RVU? I'm hoping to find my future wife in school and my parents only allow me to marry Asians. As weird as that sounds, it's true.

Thanks in advance,
Chudat

As an adult you get to make your own decisions.

Plus you dont have to limit yourself just to your medical class. I am sure there are plenty of asians in denver. During the first 2 years you will have some time to go out and socialize.

However, with what's happening lately, it's kind of hard to believe that they have no preference for the wealthy.

I'm curious as to why you think they would, in particular? I don't think it's dependent on tax status. My general impression is that if you can pay, schools don't care how you do it, whether it's through loans or your own personal funds.

That's not too weird. However, what is a bit weird is that you expect to find your future wife in medical school. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but why are you limiting yourself to that pool of people?

This statement hurts my head.

The asian comment hurts my soul .... ummm -LOL - can anyone comment on the percent of asian chicks at RVU for chudat??

See the problem with CIB is Asians is such a broad term including southeast (Indians), Philippines, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc. What about the Chinese population specifically?

Also, a poor person is most likely not able to get the kind of loan necessary for med school than a wealthy person. So they have to take that into consideration.

I'm not sure if wealth would dictate this so much as just credit score. It's very possible to be "poor" but still have a great credit score, which I think would carry the bulk of the weight when qualifying for private loans.

So, applying even though you are poor is probably not a big deal-- applying for private loans with a bad credit score could cause problems.

"my parents only allow me to marry Asians"
Are you kidding me! Grow a pair...you are an adult and can marry who you damn well please! Now, if you have the same personal preference that is a different issue, but don't come in here with that "my parents will only allow me" crap😡

Sweet bump. Did you search 'marry asian' or something???? Awkward.

I don't think it would be an issue. RVU qualifies for private loans but you need a good credit rating to get those, so loans could be an issue if you have bad credit.

Don't apply to RVU if you live outside of the Rocky Mountion area. They will collect your $50 and send you a rejection letter so fast your head will spin around and face backwards.

It happened to me and several of my friends. There was no physical way anyone could have even looked at my application beyond my home address on page one.

I concluded (perhaps unfairly but I doubt it) that the $50 was a money making revenue generating operation.

Yes, I'm still p.o.'ed about it. All I asked was a fair shake and I don't believe that I got one. 👎

RVU does not take out of state students? Aren't they private?

I'm really not sure if they have an official stance on the issue, but I know that their mission statement/purpose is to get more physicians into Colorado, so they are going to take people from the region who want to practice there when it's all said and done.

38% from CO, 20% from the region

= 42% from the rest of the country. That seems pretty reasonable, doesn't it?

Maybe some people are frustrated because the school is quite selective about who they offer interviews to. If they don't think you have a good chance of being accepted, they won't make you waste your time to fly/drive out.

Sure does. I didn't apply though so I'm not overtly familiar with the competition associated with interview selection.

Actually lawyerdoc2b, the Director of Admissions personally reads every word contained in every completed file to determine who will be invited in for an interview. The turn around time is 24 - 48 hours. If you and your friends received a denial, perhaps you should call the school to find out why as opposed to complaining that you did not receive a fair shake.

I think they're just really quick to read through applications. I submitted my app on a Thursday and got a call for an interview on Monday.

Perhaps I sounded bitter (o.k. I admit I did sound bitter). I live in Florida. I travel to Colorado on business frequently for my very large corporate employer. I received a rejection as soon as my secondary was received. I did call and got the "we have a strong preference for the region" answer and nothing else of substance. I applied to nine schools and RVU has been my one and only rejection yet I have now been accepted to two other D.O. schools and now have two other interview interviews pending. The rest I have yet to hear from beyond confirmation of a complete application. I have made my decision - I'm going to PCOM Ga.

While I have my own jaded opinion of RVU's process, I'm sure that it is a good school and wish the school and all who attend best wishes. It is worthy of note that my acceptances are at Southern schools so regional preferences are likely the best answer as to why I was rejected at RVU. Its just that 4 or 5 of my friends all had the same experience: instantaneous rejection. I'm over it now.

RVUCOM would not deny an interview to anyone based on regional considerations only. You might want to contact the Director of Admissions to receive an explanation of the reason if you have an interest.

You may be better off not going their in the first place. There may be a higher power looking out for. Plus I hear RVU has enough lawyers there! Not sure they want questions asked. PCOM is a good school.

As fire dog DO said, everything happens for a reason. I jave no interest in attending RVU anymore. I do wish the school and the students good luck.

Fire Dog D.O.,

God worked it all out. A higher power indeed. PCOM GA is the best fit for me. I am humbled and honored to have been accepted by more than one school so it ain't me that's the problem.
