Anyone else starting their third year of residency with no idea of what to do next? I'm in peds, don't want to do a fellowship, don't want to really do private practice, not interested in research, and not thrilled about academic medicine. Do people just go into private practice anyway? Find another career field? I'm sure a lot of you have found out how little practicing medicine is from what you thought 7+ years ago when you were pre-med and unaware of what was in store. Help me find a bright idea. Thanks!

Make a Pros and Cons list about what you do every day
Then you will see it spelled out in black and white.
Then, when you realize you should not be a doctor, call me and I'll tell you how many times, I was ready to do into Stock trading, or go to LA and become an actor.

Fortunately with pediatrics, you do have other options to do instead of private practice.

Pediatric hospitalists are getting more and more popular. My friends who have gone into this line of work have lots of free time. Usually they work for 2 weeks, then have another 2 weeks off. They are in a hospitalist group, so they rotate onto the service with about 6 other partners. Mind you, they work hard during those 2 weeks-- working on high acuity kids on the wards. Check to see if there are any available positions like this on your area.

Another option is Locum Tenens. They rotate and work in the clinics of other pediatricians when they are sick or go on vacation. If you live in a good area, you may be able to work just doing locum jobs from one office to another.

A lot of hospitals with NICU's will hire pediatricians to work as Mid Level Providers to help out the neonatologist. You basically serve a a nurse practitioner, but if you play your cards right you'll still get paid pretty well.

What is it you do not like about private practice? Is it having to run your own business? I myself knew I lacked that business savvy, so I opted to be an employee for a clinic. I got paid well, loved seeing my patients, but didn't have to worry about managing overhead costs. It was just the medicine.

Anyhow hope this helps, feel free to PM me or respond on this thread if you have any further questions. But I think your options are still wide open.
