BUMP, a great post for DO's from last year!

So lets see how many new places we infiltrate this year? Its funny how some program like EVMS would decline to invite a DO when they are not even a place many would apply to. I know I did not. My goal is 8 out of state interviews and interviews at all my in state schools. I also want to interview at a few places where they normally don't interview DO's just to keep the pumped primed for future DO applicants. IN case you want to know, here are my basic stats. Applied to 40+ programs in early October. USMLE I 232/94, USMLE II 262/99, COMLEX I 715/99, rank 2nd. Experience as a medic for many years as well. Interviews thus far at:

Duke
Maryland
Einstein
Kentucky
UI Peoria
UMKC Truman
LSU baton Rouge
Texas Tech
Texas A&M Scott and White

Programs I am really holding out for interviews at:

UNC
Wake
Carolinas
Vandy (can only hope)
UT-Houston (can't imagine why I would not, but nothing yet)
Mayo
UNM
INDY!!!!
Christ Hospital in Chicago

If I had to decide today where I would go based on what I know and where I want to be, it would probably be Texas A&M versus Duke for numero uno, followed by Peoria or Christ. But I can't really say anything until I see them in person.

Keep this thread alive for future generations!!!!

WAZUP all.. been a little while. Just wanted to echo Quinn's previous comments about DO friendly programs-- Don't forget about U Maryland.. their associate program director is a DO as is one of their former Chief Residents. It appears that our program judges prospective applicants on an individual basis.. the process of acceptance isn't reducible to a simple DO vs MD theme. The osteopathic profession has labored long and hard to achieve parity and now we are enjoying the veritable spoils of victory.. there's no special treatment, no special consideration.. just an imperative to do your best so that you can distinguish yourself from the rest of the EM applicant herd. Though I remain in Quinn's shadow when it comes to insight and historical perspective, please don't hesitate to PM me with program specific questions.

Good luck everyone.. (and to the SDN lifers, I really have appreciated your input over these past few years,)

I just want to thank all of the D.O.s who forged the path! Hopefully I shall follow in a couple of years.

haven't gotten any rejections yet but i haven't gotten to many acceptances yet either. my list of interviews:

Tx tech
York
Brown
U Kentucky
Einstien
Lehigh
Maricopa
St.Lukes
Scott&White
Akron General

Does anyone know what happens to a DO if they match in an allo program in one of the 5 states (MI, PA, OK, FL, WV) Are we able to get licensed if we don't get the waver approved for the internship year?

I am interviewing at Pitt, Penn State, and Geisenger in Pa and they have told me that they routinely take DO's as PGY1's and that they routinely see them get their waivers approved. Geisenger even told me that they don't require licensure at any point so it would only matter if you wanted to moonlight or stay in the state.

I know we're already into the thick of interview season for this year, but for all you third year students out there...check out Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI. It's a fantastic program that is D.O. friendly. About 20% of the attending faculty are D.O.s. If you're not already aware, Michigan is a very pro-D.O. state. There are also a number of D.O. faculty members in the areas of our hospital too.

If you were to decide to train at an Allopathic residency in Michigan you would need to complete your AOA approved internship. This sucks a bit if you're now in a state that doesn't require this commitment. If you plan on training or living, however, in a one of the 5 states that requires the internship (MI, PA, FL, WV, OK?) then you have nothing to lose since your AOA EM residency is 4 years as well 3+1. Only difficult thing to concern yourself with is that in DO EM residencies you can sign a contract for all four years. If you decide to do an allopathic residency you have to interview twice (internship and residency).

So, think about Spectrum Health... it's awesome! There are 2 D.O.s in the program of 30 now. I'd like to keep the pump primed for great D.O. students. Our volume is 120,000 (most in MI) with ~65 beds. Level 1 Trauma Center- most volume in MI. Helicopter program (able to moonlight PGY3), which brings in a lot of pts from feeder hospitals. Brand new ED. Beautiful hospital. Top notch technology. Very dedicated faculty. Amazing administration- they're always making policy changes to make the department work more effectively (just instituted a new triage system that cut 20 min/pt LOS in the department!). It's kind of mind-blowing how cool the program really is. Program has been around since '77 with 10 residents/class. Great town too.

If you're considering the program...they really place a lot of emphasis on students that rotate and do well- it covers up minor imperfections on your C.V.

I had this bookmarked from last year... just figured it would be interesting for us to continue it this year, as it might give future years some insight. What do you guys think?

bump

Really - what IS the sense of bumping something that was just bumped one hour ago?

At least you're not asking anymore how much money a person can make in a specialty.

Chill! I had just woken up and didn't check to see when it was bumped last.

My list so far

DO programs: Lehigh Valley
St. Lukes intership/EM
Sparrow intership/EM
St. Baranabas

MD programs: York
St lukes
Sparrow via the DO intership

Not feeling much love from the MDs, probably due to medicore boards scores.

Hey all, im getting a little nervous. I have a couple interviews from DO EM programs but have not heard a thing from any of the 30 some programs ive applied to. I have a good class rank, comlex well above avg and usmle is slightly below at 207. im assuming no news is better than rejections but i can't help but wonder when so many of you have heard something.

I am DO student applying to allopathic programs as well. So far, I have received 3 allopathic interviews (UMKC, Akron General, Kentucky) and 1 osteopathic interview. I applied mainly at programs that had 1 DO already in the program and at some others just for the hell of it. It is still early in the season, so I will wait and see what next week brings.

just received:
Medical College of Georgia
UT Houston
UC Irvine

also have: Resurrection, Mayo Clinic, Duke, U of Ill Peoria

UC Irvine?....I heard that although they were once a DO school that the EM program was dead set against letting in any DO's...Even though DO's rotated there and the PD loved them..wouldn't take them just because they were DO's. Has there been a changing of the gaurd?

If you don't mind... along with interview invites, please list COMLEX %, USMLE scores, Class Rank %, # programs applied...
Thanks!

I usually don't like posting specifics, but I am living proof that an average run of the mill DO student can land some interviews. No class rank, but best guess would be middle, USMLE dead-on national ave, COMLEX slightly above ave, Have not taken Step II yet, past life as EMT, nothing else special. Only thing I can think of is that I must have some strong LOR's from PD's I've worked with. Applied to total of 26-all in the northeast. Here goes:

Allo programs:
-Wright State
-Toledo
-Rochester
-Geisinger
-York (rotated there)
-Penn St
-Maine (rotated)
-UMDNJ Camden
-St. Lukes

Osteo programs:
-Would not touch with a 10 foot pole.

Way to be honest. I feel the same, although I've heard there's about 4 that are worth while. I just didn't go that route since my top 5 are all allo and osteo programs trump the match.

I applied to 23 programs in midwest, east, and southeast. I am going all allopathic. I didn't take the USMLE. I have top 5% COMLEX on Level I and II, top 5% of class. However, I have no previous EM experience. I am couples matching with my wife which makes things more difficult. Right now, I have interviews at 4 programs: UMKC, MCG, Akron General, Kentucky. No rejections yet, but I am sure programs in the Carolinas are just getting ready to send them out to us D.O.'s.

Can someone explain about the D.O. programs??????

Enjoyed reading all of the responses. Good luck to all... Some UMD updates. First, for those even considering our program, the webpage has (FINALLY) been updated to reflect some recent changes. Check it out if you need some more specific info on the program.

Also, what is Quinn doing now that he is no longer a PGY 3.xx at the USF???

Best wishes-

NMH, good luck with Maine Med. If you rotated there, it should serve you well. There are currently two DOs in the EM department. They both went the IM route to begin with. I did many rotations there my 3rd year and DOs are relied upon a great deal there. Like I said, l wish you the best.

Thanks! On top of the 2 current DO residents, A recent DO graduate of the program is now an attending there...She has definately shed some light of hope for us UNE'ers!!

Good luck with your interviews also!

You may want to e-mail her, and ask her some questions you may have about the program. It may help for her to have seen your name before (or again).

Hello guys, first of all i want to wish y'all Best of Luck in your Match. i am yet to start med school. I was wondering how competitive it is to obtain an allo EM residency as a DO. I know Maricopa request DO student to take USMLE, and I want to know how many program require it. And how many DO programs have EM residency (if so it seems like many do not like to go into these programs. why?). Last question: do you think Allo residency programs favor Offshore students (from ross and SGU) over DOs?
Any input will be appreciated.
