DO's doing allopathic match 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just curious, where have all you osteopaths interviewed at, and what places are you ranking? Any feedback would be appreciated! 😀

I'll bite, hopefully this will help next year's DO applicants.

Some Background Info:
DO Student, Top 1/3 of my class, USMLE Step 1 = 230, USMLE Step 2 = 249
As a DO student, TAKE BOTH USMLEs, it opens doors.

Applied to 17 Programs (all in the South and particularly in Texas).

Received 14 interview invites (in no particular order):
OU-OKC (declined)
MCG (declined)
Arkansas
UTHSC-SA
Presbyterian Dallas
Baylor Dallas
Methodist Dallas
Methodist Houston
UT-Houston
UT-Southwestern (AUSTIN)
Texas A&M Scott & White
UF-Gainesville
UF-Jacksonville
Memorial - Savannah, GA

Never Heard Back from 3 programs either way:
Baylor-Houston (didn't really expect to hear from them as a D.O.)
Wake Forest (categorical or primary care)
USF (kinda random, but I heard if you are out-of-state, you have to call and request an interview).

I will know where I ended up in 2.5 weeks and I will update on this thread with the results. Good Luck next year!

Ditto. The bias against DO schools is too strong sometimes. There are places in this country where there simply aren't a lot of allopathic schools around, and people choose a DO school instead of moving far away to go to an allopathic school. Their clinical years experience is essentially the same.

I gave up a lot of interviews.

All in all

Interviewed at
VCU
Ohio St
CCF
PSU

awaiting the match and I put VCU over OSU...good luck

I am having a hard time believing that one of these programs pre-matched this guy. I heard just community type hospitals get involved in pre-matching medical students

I know at least 5 programs on that list that prematch, but very, very selectively - definitely not more than 3-4 spots...and those are probably all the IMGs/DO's that they will take i.e.they will then not rank the rest of the IMGs or DOs high enough on their ROL to match.

Well he obviously has the stats to deserve a spot in any of those programs, I am just suprised that those programs get involved in pre-matching medical students. In any case, congrats man!!

The concept behind these programs prematching ANY student (especially in case of IMGs and DOs, where they are a bit less certain about the quality of medical education) is that -
1. They want to promote some diversity among their housestaff
2. They want to be absolutely sure of what they are getting. So if they do, they will take IMGs and DOs only through prematches.; and then rank them not-so-high on their list, so as they have enough backup in case they dont match (to avoid a 'Duke').
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule; and many top-20 programs will rank non-traditional applicants to match - especially the 1-2 they interview. But most of the programs, who only interview 1-2 non-trad applicants, interview them because they think they would like to have them, and in such a case, it is in the program's and (often the candidates' interest) to sign a prematch.

Again, not the rule/always under any circumstances, but I have seen/heard it happening.

My CCF tour / lunch was conducted by a D.O. who prematched there. It is apparently not unheard of, and the hospital is pretty nice.

Non-JHH Hopkins programs have many IMG's (and by extension DO's I would imagine), and given this candidate's scores, would probably offer a prematch contract given what they might end up with in the match. Same with non-Rochester Mayo.

I doubt WashU, JHH/Osler, and to some extent Pitt, would offer them, so those were not likely the #1 referenced. No clue about the other programs. I am somewhat amazed that JHH extended an interview offer, didn't remember any in my interview other than off-service anesthesia and ER types.

I'm curious as well? Also, anyone at OHSU?

FWIW, OHSU usually matches 1-2 DOs a year out of 30-ish interns. In the 4 years I've been here, they've usually been from the bigger, more established schools (PCOM, CCOM, Western, VCU-COM are the ones that jump out at me right now). No idea how many they interview though.

I find it very interesting that some programs who interview and rank DOs, will absolutely NOT interview IMGs (OHSU comes to mind), while some who interview a few IMGs every year, will absolutely NOT interview DOs (Baylor comes to mind). I wonder what is the thought process behind this. I wonder if it has something to do with the confidence of having good residents from those medical schools in the preceding years; because the stats are often the same.

OHSU does interview IMG/FMGs but they are very selective. They do NOT interview Carib students. They do interview a small # of FMGs (usually from places like Cambridge) and a few IMGs who are dual citizens and went to med school in their dual citizenship country. There are usually 0-1 FMGs per class.

Hi. I don't post much but I thought I'd share my info on California programs for future applicants. My stats: Top 10%, USMLE Step 1: 247/99, USMLE Step 2: 252/99. Concentrating in SoCal because of family.

Interviewed:
Cedars-Sinai
UCLA-Olive View
Kaiser Permanente Sunset
LAC+USC
Huntington Memorial
UC Irvine
Loma Linda
Santa Barbara Cottage
Scripps Green
St. Mary's (Long Beach)

No love from: UCLA, UCSD, Stanford, UCSF (Yeah, what was I thinking by applying?! But hey, you'll never know if you don't try) 🙂

Good luck everyone matching this year!

Nasadorn, that's a very impressive interview list. I have head that Cedars-Sinai is very numbers based (i.e. put a lot of emphasis on Step 1, more so than other programs). Did you find this to be accurate for yourself or for other interviewees?

What's your #1 choice? Good luck in the match!

My stats: Top 20% of my class, good COMLEX scores, no USMLE, good LORs and personal statement commented on by many of my interviewers.

Interviews I took:
VCU, Louisville, Iowa, Minnesota, Scott & White, OU-OKC, UT San Antonio, MetroHealth, Missouri-Columbia, South Carolina Palmetto, St. Vincent Indianapolis, Texas Tech.

Cancelled for one reason or another:
Nebraska, Penn State, Chicago Northshore, Michigan State, Illinois-Peoria, UTMB, LSU-New Orleans, Providence Portland.

Good luck everyone and I can't wait until March 18th.

PistolPete,
I can't really comment about other interviewees. However, I sat down with the program director and asked him about their history of ranking DOs to match. His response was simply that they select interviewees based on their academic merits with a pretty strong emphasis on USMLE scores (I don't know if they have a "cut off "). Note, I said USMLE scores. You need it. You won't be considered with COMLEX alone. If you're granted an interview, you're basically on the same playing field as everyone else regardless of the title behind your name. I hope this helps!

VCU is an allopathic school. edward via (vcom) is an osteopathic school.

As to the comments about a lot of FMGs in the non-osler hopkins progams there are 3 tiers of hopkins programs. hopkins sinai is only hopkins in name. very few of the faculty are actual hopkins faculty. sinai is not part of the hopkins drpartment of internal medicine and is full of FMGs. it is not a very good program.

hopkins bayview is part of the hopkins dept of internal medicine. all of the faculty are appointed by hopkins and 40% of all hopkins im faculty are at bayview. There are a few FMGs, generally european or south american as one of their main missions is diversity. There are also 2 DOs from NYCOM if I remember correctly so they are DO friendly. The match list is very strong from bayview and looks like most other fellowship match lists from top tier programs with most people matching at hopkins. Bayview is heavier on primary care as it is where the hopkins primary care program is. It also has R
2 NIH reseach facilities on the campus. Bayview is an excellent program.

so if you were to rank the 3:
osler> bayview >> sinai

No worries. Both are in Virginia so i could see how it could get confused.

So what programs are DO students applying at this year? And where are y'all getting interviews?

I'm curious too.

Also, anyone who matched allo last year care to share your stats and where you ended up?

Anyone know any CA/FL/TX programs that offer a pre-match?

My stats: Top 20% of my class, good COMLEX scores, no USMLE, good LORs.

Interviews I took:
Louisville, VCU, Iowa, Minnesota, Scott & White-Texas A&M, OU-OKC, UT San Antonio, MetroHealth-Case Western, Missouri-Columbia, South Carolina Palmetto, St. Vincent Indianapolis, Texas Tech-Lubbock.

Cancelled for one reason or another:
Nebraska, Penn State, Chicago Northshore, Michigan State, Illinois-Peoria, UTMB, LSU-New Orleans, Providence Portland.

I ended up at Louisville, and I really like it.

Good luck to everybody, and if you have specific questions you can PM me.

Why does that surprise you? American graduates have less issues, and the product is pretty much uniform. This is one reason that D.O.'s can often match at VERY competitive allopathic programs. There is no way in God's green earth that a D.O. will be matched into the Osler medicine program (in spite of what was hinted above)--connections, interviews or not. It will never happen. Save the $10 for a beer in an expensive city.

Interivews so far Univ. of Indiana, UMDNJ-RWJS, and Dartmouth. Applied second week of September.

I'll play...

So far:
-Albert Einstein (Philadelphia)
-KP-Santa Clara
-Loma Linda
-OHSU (interviewed during my rotation)

Nervously awaiting more invites at the moment

Interviews so far: UTMB-Galveston, Methodist-houston, Methodist-Dallas

Thanks! Anyone else with new interview invitations? 🙂

Do you guys recommend its better to do a General Sub I vs a subspecialty elective early in 4th year (june - Sept)?

I am 3rd year DO student interested in IM, and trying to figure out how should I set up my 4th year schedule.

I am an MD and some of the invites here are out of this world for DO's, great going. Good luck to you all.

BTW, some of those programs that people mentioned do offer prematch and I came across some amazing IMG's during my away rotation, particularly from India who knew their stuff so well.

Sometimes I felt embarrassed because they knew so much more than me, and I went to a top tier med school in the US! Some of them did not have great board scores but they absolutely knew their stuff. They totally changed my view about IMG's. I think that they can be a real asset to be around as colleagues, learned a lot from them.

Any new invitations since the Nov 1 MSPE release? Also, when do programs typically offer pre-match agreements? Thanks! 😀

here are my interviews so far 🙂 ...good luck everyone!

To the allopathic students who may be reading this thread: have you seen any osteopathic students along the trail at some of the places you have interviewed at? If so, where?
