hello fellow sdners!

does anyone know how difficult it is to match into allopathic IM in philadelphia for DO's given the PA DO intership rule and the fact that there are osteopathic im programs in the area.

basically, do allopathic programs still consider you even though you may only be able to get a resident in training permit during your residency (assuming that you are not able to get the AOA internship waived)

well, i don't know if i can give you a complete answer..

but I applied and recieved interviews from the following programs in Philadelphia,
Temple, Drexel, Thomas Jefferson..I didn't apply to UPenn and was rejected from Univ of Pittsburg, but got an interview at Penn State. So most programs for allopathic I.M are receptive to DO's.

As for going on the interviews, I canceled them all because, i found out about the 1 year intership requirment for license afterwards....so, i think if you want to train there it shouldn't be a problem to get a temproary license, but if you want to moonlight then you'll have to do an extra year or petition the AOA or something. I'm not to sure about the specifics. Just call the programs...most of them are honest and will do their best to answer your questions, ask them if there are any housestaff who are D.O's. Sometimes its on their website, otherwise they can just tell you..

As for anyone actually matching there...i personally don't know anyone, but i did meet another medical student(M.D) during my USMLE CSA in Philadelphia who was starting at Penn State I.M this year, who said there were DO's in there program. But i'm not sure about that.

I did part of my medicine rotation at Pennsylvania Hospital. They take a DO student or two every year.
