Double legacy

Both my father and grandfather (who was a professor emeritus there) attended the same osteopathic medical school. How much will this fact help me?
While people may not like to hear it, provided that your GPA & MCAT are "acceptable" something like that will help a good deal, provided that those individuals on the ADCOM don't have something against your father/grandfather.

It is just how the real world works...

Did they donate enough to build a new wing on the med school? Have they regularly given money through their alumni association over the years? Are they on name-recognition terms with the med school dean? Assuming that you are typical and that none of the above is true, then if your stats are subpar, you might be offered a courtesy interview anyway. It's better not to plan to skate by with mediocre stats and ECs, and to get attention on your own merits, rather than relying on family connections, which (to be honest) may help, but more likely will do you no good at all in these days of oversight and recent scandals over undeserved admissions.

Why, are you worried?

They are both on name-recognition terms with the dean and both regularly donate money each year. Obviously I know that it would help, but I wasn't sure of the extent of it and was hoping that the SDN community could provide more insight on the topic- I mainly asked out of curiosity as my science gpa is not attrocious (3.3) so I'm not "worried"

I think you may get some benefit from this at any medical school. You have been raised by physicians and (should be therefore) more aware of what you are getting yourself into than others. Be careful to not sound like you are playing the entitlement card, though; you have to stand on your own despite the advantage of having been raised by doctors. You still should shadow other docs, have solid grades, a good MCAT, and a strong personal motivation for medicine, etc. Furthermore, I think you need to really consider if 'their' medical school is the ideal fit for 'you'. You don't need to go to the same school if you will be better served elsewhere.

Actually, a 3.3 is sort of bordering on atrocious. Connections will help you a lot, but you'll still need the baseline qualifications to get in. Go kick the MCAT in the nuts, and you'll be fine.

See... I like to think of the MCAT as my former cruel mistress... I've now upgraded to having the USMLE series as my cruel mistress.

Which is why to me the MCAT doesn't have nuts... so I'd tell OP to kick the MCAT in the ovaries!

Interesting..see, I know you could use the first-generation college student schtick to get into college but never thought you could use family lineage to get into med school.

What if I don't know my grandfather on my father's side but know he was a doctor? Can I get bonus points?

Seriously dude?
