well recently i've been thinking alot about what im going to minor/major in.

my closest pre-med friend is doing a humanity as well as chemistry with me. He says its great for him b/c he doesn't have to think about chemistry all day + he claims it looks better on his med school app.

Ive been thinking about what i wanna minor or possibly double major in.. however the only things i find interesting are science based majors .. well with the exception of anthropology/music

any ideas?

Humanity + biology for me
graduated with the same dual major.

My opinion is that undergrad is a time to explore different types of classes. If you know you have an interest in 2 sciences or a science and anthro, and want to delve more into them... then go for the dual major. If you are certain about only one major - do only one.... but use your elective time to explore other types of classes -- in humanities, social sciences, ect.

No requirement to double major or get a minor. Do what makes you happy and will give you the most out of your undergrad experience. Remember - if you end up in medical school, the rest of your life will be devoted to the sciences... so why not explore out fields and ways of thinking Now, while you have the chance

my opinion is, the more diverse it makes you the more appealing you are as an applicant. It seems like a lot of schools try to diversify the backgrounds of their students as much as possible

You might want to try anthro or music then! Also consider pysch, which was my double with bio. Basically, take a few diverse classes and turn the one you like into a major or minor.

Might be doing a religion and bio double major. Depends on a few things.

i did a humanities + biology double major too. though you may look more appealing to adcoms with the humanities degree, i'd really do it only if you *really* wanted to learn about that major. i always knew since college that i wanted to be a physician/social sciences academic, hence the double major, and it was one of the best decisions i've made. medicine-- and everything else in the world-- looks different when you're able to see if from all these amazingly different perspectives, and i believe that it only makes you a better physician.

Not EXACTLY a double major, but I'm working on my BA in Biology, and I started my MPH this semester. My school offers a bachelors/masters program, all in 4 years 🙂

i did a double major in physiology and french. when i tried to add the french major, everyone in the physiology department that had to sign me off tried to dissuade me, emphasizing that it "won't help you get in to med school". i didn't care, because like others i did it because of my love for french and the diversity it brought to my college experience.

for both med schools at which i interviewed, 95% consisted of talking about my french major and my associated service activities in france! i would highly recommend doing what you love as an undergrad, you'll get plenty of science in med school 🙂

I double majored and double minored.

Biological Anthropology and Medieval Studies.

I did a double major in a hummanity + Biology like many of the people on the thread. I didn't get the impression it really helped me as an applicant. One school straight up told me they didn't care. If you want to do it go for it! I loved it and I am so glad I did. But if you want it just to help your application go for more EC's and keep your grades up. Major in what you are interested in. I really struggled to fit in work and EC's with the double major since I always had an overloaded class schedule and it doesn't leave you much flexibility. Follow your interests.

Physiology/Nutritional Sciences!! They blend together very well and I find it fascinating! Also, I've heard that nutrition is something that is often not emphasized in medical school curriculum...

Double major in Neuroscience and Medieval studies for me.

I actually found that it was a great conversation starter at numerous interviews for internships, scholarships, and the like.

Biological Chemistry and Physics.
Both hard sciences but quite different. I think I got a lot out of the combination.

biology and exercise science for me!
I really enjoy learning about the application of physiology/metabolism/biochem to exercise, since I'm really into sports and working out.

Wikipedia says, "Examples of the disciplines of the humanities are ancient and modern languages, literature, law, history, philosophy, religion, and visual and performing arts (including music and theatre). Additional subjects sometimes included in the humanities are technology, anthropology, area studies, communication studies, cultural studies, and linguistics, although these are also regarded as social sciences."

I'm doing Molecular/Cell Bio and Spanish. The humanities major was a nice way to get my university's (pretty liberal) gen ed requirements out of the way productively.

In my experience, interviewers were actually way more interested in the Spanish major...I had one interview where we talked about 16th century Spanish lit for like 15 minutes...

Philosophy/Physiology & Neurobiology for me. At my college Physiology & Neurobiology is considered as one major! it's one of the three sub branches for Biological sciences program at UCONN.
Biological Sciences:
1) Physiology and Neurobiology(PNB)
2) Microbiology and Cell biology(MCB)
3) Ecology and Evolutionary biology(EEB)
I choose PNB, coz is pretty awesome!

Yo! Im a Uconn Student too - I was a PNB major until i switched to Chem when i realized how much more awesome it is.

double major and double minor right now
^ biomed and psychology
minors = chem & middle eastern studies

I did a dual degree in Psychology and Public Health, with a minor in Art History. All three were interesting and a nice complement to some of the more challenging hard science classes I took. Plus, so much of the material overlapped: there were biology concepts presented in my psych classes and psych statistical concepts in public health courses. Art History was ... just fun. 🙂

Really its more awesome than PNB? well honestly my friends tell me that PNB is wicked hard! but wtv i am gonna go with it!

The people who are double majoring and minoring etc, how long is this gonna take you guys to finish it all?

i double majored in biology and theatre, with a minor in chemistry. it took my 5 and a half years to finish, with a medical leave one semester, and another semester abroad. 🙂

Double majoring in pre-med studies and music = best decision I ever made as an undergrad. If your heard and head are in it, I'd say go for it! 🙂

Technically I double majored and double minored (my minors were theater and history). I graduated the summer after the rest of my class. If I had not upgraded one of my degrees from a BA to a BS at the last minute I would have graduated on time.

I'm thinking of majoring in psych and minor in neuroscience.

But, i still think about it and find it unnecessary. So I'm debating on just majoring in psych alone, but not sure.

Having more than 1 major absolutely will not help you get into med school, so toss that idea out the window. If that's your motivation for doing the extra work, don't bother.

my primary motivation isn't for med school; i feel like i need to do something different with my educational life before i goto med school.. i dont want to learn science all the time. I wanna feel well rounded.. lol

I double majored in Mol & Cell Bio and South Asian Studies as an undergrad .. and loved it. While MCB made logical sense as a premed, my courses in SA balanced things out ... not to mention thanks to language courses, I went from conversation-only to being able to read/write/speak fluently in Hindi. If you have the time and there's something that interests you enough to go beyond just a few elective classes, I say go for it!
