I have a question for you all....I have wanted to be a Dentist for as long as I can remember, but lately I am doubting whether i have a chance.This is why:

I am attending a community college
I have currently completed 45 credit hours:
Class & Letter grades:

Precalc C lecter Calc I lecter A
Physic I B lecter B in lab
CHem I C lecter B in lab (<<<<this is the one that really hurts, my apt burned down that semester and things were hectic) 😱

And I am currently taken Chem II....My overall GPA is 3.35. I feel like perhaps I am way behind in my courses for I will be at 49 hours shortly with out Bio I & II or organic and physics II (Medical college of Georgia only requires one physics, but it seems like other schools want two). I plan to take Organic in the Fall.

Now realistically, should I continue to towards Dental school? I am full of doubts right now. 😕

Don't give up! You still have a ways to go! My two cents: Attain a grade of B or higher in all future chemistry courses. Though admissions committee's do consider achievement within each prerequisite discipline, they will concentrate on your ability to improve - placing a heavier emphasis on recent achivements.

Keep your chin up and stop doubting yourself! Doubting is detrimental. Only you can create your opportunities. Stay focused and do not allow yourself to become distracted.

It sounds to me like you are doing a very good job in your pre-dent classes. Don't let O-chem nail you and you're set. Keep up the good work!

Those are not the best grades, but they definitely are not the worst. Just try to improve with wach semester, get involved and do awesome on the DAT. That is something they cannot question at all. I know plenty of peopel that began at a community college and got in and I also know others that started out pretty weak but finished strong. They too got in. If it is your dream, then reach for it.....don't settle for anything less.

i would learn how to spell lecture too. i dont know if it's just me, but mastering the english language is key to practicing dentistry in this country. i dont care how smart you are, if you aren't fluent in english here, patients are going to be less comfortable with you.

doesn't anyone else wonder how people can pull these 3.5-4.0 gpa's and not even write a coherent post on an internet chat board? i'm sorry, it's just something that kinda irks me.

i'm dead serious here. this is supposed to be a professional forum here. i'm not saying everyone should spell check everything and search for grammatical errors, but come on ...... lecter? what would you think if you were sitting on an adcom and a person had misspellings throughout their essay? simply pointing out an area that needs attention. as for me, i need more attention to calculus cause i'm an idiot in the subject.

It takes time for some people, and to flame someone based on their spelling or grammer is down right low, IMO of course.

To the OP: Don't ever give up. I failed out of college right after high school. I then worked and went to a community college, with persistence I got myself into an ivy league school. There is no subsitute for peristance and dedication.

To UMDeeMan: While I can't say that I disagree with your feeling about the necessity to be fluent in the english language, I do disagree with your attitude. If you want to be a professional one day, you might want to start acting like one now.

On a serious note, haven't you ever misspelled a word? Give the OP a break. We all suffer from grammatical miscues from time to time. Yourself included.

Don't worry about proofreading this post, Mr. UMDeeMan. I had the folks at Essayedge.com check over this post for spelling and grammar.

P.S. I know you're busy discouraging people and everything, but if you can spare a moment, perhaps you should do a little researching on the existence of a critical period in second language acquisition. I suggest a study by Johnson & Newport.

I just noticed that I misspelled the word "grammar". Looks like I'll be a terrible dentist. 🙄

Back to the original question: beatnik, your overall gpa isnt all that bad. Just make sure you do well in Organic. You have solid stats for many private schools out there.

The average entering GPA for MCG hovers around 3.45 so you are definitely in the ballpark. Just be sure to work hard and do well in your future coursework and you should have an excellent chance at admission. MCG is a good school and CHEAP; be sure to put it at the top of your list. Where are you going to school right now?

I am starting my second year at MCG on Wednesday so feel free to ask any questions about the school.

jesus, glad to have pissed everyone off. i dont think anyone quite gets what i'm trying to get at but i'll drop it before there is a lynching. why is it everyone gets so uptight when a weakness is pointed out. i wasn't trying to make fun of anyone. i hope i can get honest, real world responses when the time comes when i post my stats and ask for feedback. if i have no shot in hell, tell me. too much babying and sugar-coating takes place these days.

I would just like to say that I do know how to spell lecture, and that on that particular thread, I was typing fast and did not go back and correct any mistakes. Not that this makes a difference, but I am fluent in English, as well as, three other languages. Therefore I think it is needless to say that I am very capable of communicating, spoken or written. I do appreciate a "real" response, but I failed to see how yours was supposed to be helpful.
